DR1 News will not be updated on Tuesday, 21 January 2025, a national holiday that commemorates the Day of the Virgin of High Grace (Virgen de la Altagracia). The celebrations of the Roman Catholic Church event take place East in Higuey and are centered around the Higuey Basilica. The Virgin of High Grace is the protector of the Dominican people.

The celebration of the holiday on a Tuesday, created a long weekend for many who could take the day off. Provisions should be made to avoid delays in reaching your destination, meaning traveling early, especially when returning to the cities on the holiday.

DR1 News for the day will be compiled for the Wednesday, 22 January 2025 issue. The DR1 Forums continue open 24/7.

I was looking for others to google this ridiculous holiday for me.

I was being beyond facetious on this stupid day to give people a day off of work.
The only thing I can say to this post is you are a very ignorant man. Full of hate, and bigotry. Who cares what your small mind thinks?
You show your stupidity daily.

BTW. You do know that matters of religion are not allowed on DR1. Since they allowed this I thought I would engage in a personal attack so you would know my feelings before it is deleted.

As with every other holiday, the vast majority of people were working. As long as you didn't need to go to the bank, you probably weren't inconvenienced at all.

The Boca Chica beachfront was packed yesterday.
So was National supermarket. A wait just to get into the parking lot. Jammed packed. Great day for people to get things done. Luis attended special mass on his "day off".

What is ridiculous to you is not at all to the country which you call "home", the DR. Rather disrespectful on your part.
Whereas tone may be considered somewhat disrespectful, the opportunity here is how can the government could find a way to eliminate unnecessary waste including, but not límited to, reducing the stunningly excessive business days off.

The holiday is quite important to older members of my husband's family, who are still Catholic, and our generation, not so much the younger ones. Monday we drove up to Hotyoncito, west of Hato Mayor, which is along the Virginia Altagracia pilgrimage route. The First Lady was in attendance and there were a lot of people there, arriving regularly and tons of security. My husband listened in to the scuttlebutt outside, people were hoping to get something free from the government as apparently they (government?) are building small houses to give to people to populate, modernize the area - maybe economic development, maybe all rumours... Meanwhile the place we're staying at and beach here in Juan Dolio was packed with the Capitalitos and others yesterday.

According to the list posted here on DR1 in mid-November, there are 12 national holidays in 2025. Three happen to be in January, so it does feel excessive right now. There are also 12 federal US holidays in 2025, so I hope you feel the same about those.

I appreciate your ad hominem attacks and the kind words, I really do.

This is about a stupid holiday. Nothing more.

On the contrary. We had a high tension insulator break on a power pole over the weekend. Edenorte was not answering their telephone for 2 days and also not responding to WhatsApp as well. If that line with thousands of volts on it had dropped 6 more inches it would have hit the neutral line and many people could have lost their appliances, inverters, TVs etc.. before a fuse blew out.

So I have a good reason to mention the delays caused by this idiotic holiday.

The problem was fixed yesterday, finally.

And so it goes. I have NO respect for a holiday like this one. Zero .. Never will. And that is just me.

I too agree that religious holidays shouldn't be national holidays, however it is what it is. It allowed my wife and I to go on a nice relaxing walk along the river trail with no noisy kids around. Windeguy should be used to this holiday by now, however I understand his frustration when a dangerous situation isn't fixed due to everyone off work.
