DR1 is not a mongering site.

I also think, from a commercial perspective, that DR1 needs to make the site have far less emphasis on mongers and chicas. I know for a fact that a couple of friends of mine who run hotels have said they wouldn't advertise on the site because they don't want to attract the monger / chica crowd to their business. I know that DR1 relies on its advertising revenue to survive so this is an important point.

It is a bit of a slippery slope to be honest. For people like me who don't ever go to Sosua, nor Boca Chica, and hardly ever go to the North Coast, the more that DR1 focuses on these areas, the less relevant it is to me, the less that I visit it, the less that I post, and so it goes on until the site ends up as a niche site for a few people. I would suggest that the mods start some conversations about things which have a wider appeal. Climate change and how people think it may affect DR? Education for children, particularly expat children? Guides on what to do if you're visiting a particular town for the day? There's so much that we could be reading other than this incessant ranting about Pedro Clissante being closed (does anyone outside Sosua care?) and whether anyone has actually been deported for overstaying 30 days.

Huh? The majority of the topics here have nothing to do with mongering. I dont understand why people are acting like every other thread here was dealing with the sex trade. It was literally "one" thread and even in that thread it was glossed over because the mod in that thread was doing a damn good job keeping it focused. As for your friends, everyone knows that you made that up. Dr1 mainly focuses on overstays, immigration issues and current events in the country.

yes climate change and a no plastic straw thread would probably stimulate 9 responses.

I agree with alexw. There are not that many threads about mongers etc. It's just that the ones that exist get a lot of attention but if you don't like them don't open/read them, problem solved.
If DR1 starts putting such limits on which threads can be opened and commented on then I would stop reading/participating.
Freedom of speech/expression to me is very important to me if when I strongly disagree with what is being said or written.

Wrong, most likely, DR1 members would drag the threads on forever...

:smoke: In just a "Plastic Straw" thread there would be heated debate on

... what color they were,
... how long they were,
... how short they were,
... how they were discarded,
... what substance they were used in,
... who made them,
... were they foreign or domestic,
... etc, etc, etc.

This is a privately run forum. There is no freedom of speech here. The title of this thread should make that clear.

I am happy to share names with AlterEgo but feel absolutely no need to justify myself to you. Please be careful about accusing people of lying on a public forum, it isn't a good thing to do.

I think you are just proving my point. You, and a few others are really happy with spending all day posting hundreds and hundreds of pages about overstaying on tourist visas, whether Alex can buy lunch for 5 people for 200 pesos and still have change left over, and what bars are open or not on Pedro Clissante. But I believe it is true to say that the vast majority of expats who live in Dom Rep are not.

Personally I think that the erosion of the beach at Las Terrenas and the supposedly increased likelihood that we will have a Cat 5 hurricane is far more interesting and relevant to many and would be good to discuss. One of the main reasons that I check DR1 every day is to see if Mike Fisher has posted anything on the hurricane post.

Not necessary, I know who you are, and I know you know other hotel and business owners in DR. I agree with your post about post content and advertisers

Yes, DR1 is privately owned, and is entirely self-funded. Look for some changes before year end.

Yea, of course I get that however in the years I've been on DR1 I felt, for the most part, opinions were allowed to be expressed with some exceptions. There was one past moderator that in my opinion acted like a school mom and the "power" went to her head but besides that I think Robert has allowed a great deal of freedom of speech.
I am often amazed that people will repeatedly write complaints about a thread within the thread. If I don'e like or more often am not interested in a thread, I simply don't open it.

I, for one, never thought of DR1 as an "expat" site.

There is a forum here for residents, but it doesn't seem to grab any traction.

Besides, on every forum I've encountered one axiom is true: controversy sells, and controversy grabs eyeballs.

Education for children, particularly expat children?

Some interesting reads about the worlds education systems.
https://listindiario.com/las-mundia...de-china-el-pais-numero-uno-en-la-prueba-pisa

At the bottom of this Washington Post article, it list the results by country and
wouldn't ya know, the Dominican Republic finished dead last in two of the three
chosen categories.
