Earthquake at 7:11

I felt it in Santiago. The epicenter was in the ocean southwest of Santo Domingo. It was strong enough here to make me move under a doorjamb.

The building in Santo Domingo shook for a few seconds but the dogs and cats didn't react.

Rattled the building here in Santo Domingo Oeste, maybe 10 to 15 seconds. in two waves. I made sure everyone was up and ready to move if it got bad. I'm used to earthquakes from living in California, this one wasn't particularly alarming, but you never know when it's going to be a 7 or even a 9. And this one could be a
"pre-quake" to a stronger one coming.

There have been numerous small quakes in the past several weeks but this one was the closest to the capital . When they are in the south ,they tend to be centered just off the coast near Boca de Yuma , according to the Earthquake alert site.

Just in case people don't know, not supposed to try to run out of the building. I noticed some people doing that here this morning. Less likely to get hurt by staying were you are and taking cover. Glass windows can create shards of glass like daggers flying through the room. Also pools can toss out 10 to 30 tons of water, probably don't want to be near one in a strong earthquake.

looks like good advice. Also, Tsunamis are possible, just something to keep in mind: the 2004 Indonesia Tsunami was caused by a 9.1 earthquake, waves came inland about 3 miles. Hopefully it never does happen, but It's always good to have an idea of what can happen.

Believe me, I thought about that when I saw where the epicenter was. We’re not far from there and near the water. Hopefully it was a one off and not a harbinger of things to come.

I wonder if it would come in 3 miles thru all the buildings......... unobstructed, I can imagine..... into a metropolis, not so sure

The tsunami in Japan was about 9 meters high. What is the verticle distance down from the malecon in Santo Domingo to the ocean level?
