Most people in the Dominican Republic know that if they do not pay their power bill, they will be cut out from the service. Then how come EdeEste, the government-owned power distributor serving eastern Santo Domingo and beyond, has allowed a selection of customers to accumulate past bills for more than RD$662 million?

EdeEste says that in an effort to collect the outstanding debt and avoid unnecessary legal expenses, they are making available several measures to assist customers in regularizing their situation. Among the measures:• Publishing a list of customers with the largest outstanding balances• Enhancing its online platform to allow customers to manage their accounts quickly and securely from the comfort of their homes• Extending the service hours of all its offices• Offering specialized agents to provide various payment options• Waiving late payment fees for customers who...

When did they start doing this? During covid they billed a lot of people with bogus high bills. You still had to pay until they revised it. If you didn't your lights would be cut off

Meanwhile elsewhere, normal people wait in line patiently to diligently pay their bills from the little resources they may have. Way to go EDEeste.

I have had to deal with Edenorte and Edeeste during the years, and I have to give some credit to Edenorte. I have dealt with them personally and they do somehow have brains in place. Edeeste, not so much. The time we spent living in the capital years ago, we never paid for luz as despite me going personally 3-4 times to the freaking Edeeste office en la Independencia, they refused to acknowledge that the building we lived in, existed. It was not in their system so not contract was possible. Me asking them, very stupidly, how come we have luz from you then, they friendly agent just shrugged... So a friendly neighbor made a "connection" from the pole to our house. Once it was taken down by Edeeste, which still did not help with the case, but the same night this same friendly neighbor was back and with a few pesos, our free luz was back... Never heard from Edeeste again, thankfully. That was stupid... Apparently not many people on that street paid for luz for the same reason... And it was not a barrio... With Edenorte, we have never really had any issues, just slight incompetence, that's all...

Rant over...

Additionally, they seem to accommodate these who own a lot quite a bit, so whenever someone normal receives a visit from EDE to cut their power, they should show them this piece of news and ask why they cannot be accommodated or given extension... I would like to see what the response is...

For me it has always been important to pay all the bills on time, but these kinds of piece of news kind of makes me actually want to steal luz from the EDEs...

C'mon Josh, you're not going to ask an electric company contractor who gets paid by the meter to know the answer, or ever care for that matter.

Fair enough, I should have worded that differently... I was just slightly irritated by this news as we know people who in fact pay their bills for luz and other stuff from rather scarce resources, every cent of which they have worked hard to earn... I obviously realize EDEs have corruption but it's accommodating the big debtors that got me...

But if they cut it off you can get the same contractor to re connect it. lol

Honestly, I haven't figured out why some of the entities on that list get away with this.

It's not something you can easily identify.
