I agree 100% with you, but there's no financial advantage.

The deluxe system.
Let's say you buy 16 batteries @ 100 bux/each, the total cost is $1,600 US.
As the batteries last twice as long, let's say 6 years, it costs you $1,600 US for 6 years.

Cheapo system.
You buy 8 batteries @ 100 bux/each, the total cost is $800 US.
As the batteries only last 3 years, because of the greater abuse, it costs you $800 US for 3 years, or $1,600 US for 6 years, same price as the deluxe system.

The only advantage would be in the 16 battery system being able to endure longer power failures.

I guess it all depends upon whether or not you have to pay for;

1] Battery delivery.
2] Battery installation.
3] Battery maintenance.
4] Removal of old batteries.

Not to mention the "down time" associated with the installation of new batteries.

1) I've never been charged for delivery, although it is a possibility, if you live really far away from where you buy them.
2) Again, it's usually included in the purchase, although I prefer to do my own, because I can and know exactly how I want it set up, as well as I can be sure that everything is done to perfection.
Anyone who has ever had a battery blow up because of a loose contact, knows what I'm talking about.
3) The 16 battery system would cost a bit more for maintenance, but it's such a minor expense that it's hardly worth mentioning, considering how inexpensive distilled water is.
4) There's always someone who wants the old batteries. Some people figure they can squeeze a bit more life out of them, some renovate batteries and want them for the casings, some people even pay for them for the lead inside.

As for downtime when hooking up a new batteries, it shouldn't take more then 30 seconds, twice during the installation.

If you're not concerned with cost, why not use car batteries? Cheaper than deep cycle batteries with less worries...or are they?

You must have misunderstood something.
Nowhere did I say that I wasn't concerned with costs.
I did point out that your proposed system with more batteries would be more expensive to maintain, but that it was a small amount.
All in all, the net result is that it's cheaper to not use the double battery system you propose, but not a major difference, and it would have the advantage of withstanding longer power failures.

We also.......

I have used EDTA several times in the hopes to extend battery life. Each time with very limited, if any, success. I even used the very high quality EDTA purchased from the US and most recently tried the commercially produced Battery Viagra. Certainly nothing I have seen would make me recommend EDTA for anything other than a short term "booster shot" while I procure new batteries. At best, I am "neutral" in the case of recommending EDTA at this point of trying it over a 6 year period.

And with the new electricity prices upping most of our rates by 22.4%, if your batteries are indeed wasting a lot of energy by getting hot, I am even more inclined to change out a bad batch more quickly than before.

.......purchased our EDTA from the US and paid quite a bit for it.......We have not had good results..........

I only use the EDTA powder from Distribudora de Quimicos bought in DR and it's all been good. "Battery Viagra" ... waste of money! I also only use Planeta Azul water; I don't even buy the commercial stuff.

I use about half a teaspoon of powder per hole in enough water to dissolve it; mix only with plastic or wood spoon, NO metal, once every 2 months or so.

The instructions that came with my edta said one tablespoon per cell. I wonder what effect the metal spoon would have.

From what I've heard, Trace don't actually make batteries. So these are probably some unknown brand with a fancy sticker on them.

Go for the Trojans.

Sounds like something you would chant at a ball game!!!

Free edta!!!!

is it ok to turn off charger switch on inverter when batteries are fully charged???
then turn on after inverter comes on and power returns...
bob

What inverter do you have? I can not see an advantage since its all automatic.

Free EDTA to all dr1 members. I should be in Santiago from 8/21 - 9/8. PM me if interested.
