Same old. Same old. Nothing has changed and nothing will change.

well sosua probably used to be better....but el batey ,,, just more of them....first time i was there we stumbled into a RED light district....right in the middle of town /area... of course i loved it for the newness of it ... it was like mexico in the movies,,,whores all in the process of life during the day...customers for the lucky ones who where up early...other ones doing wash for busy ladies who paid them... ladies hanging around dressed nice trying to attract a daylite bite...
i drank my way thru that,,,a mad observer...didnt know how to .(probably had a peso shortage as in those days we were new to town and never new how much too carry$$$..wanted to observe more than partake...but i was always in awe of a beauty when i saw one...it would reduce me.because i am a lover of beauty.....i couldnt understand how a woman so beautiful should end up in a dom brothel...
but i made it home on my suzuki passola...
ill never forget that beautiful woman washing laundry in front of her wooden/door ,with full figure and see thru garments on inviting me in......:cheeky::cheeky::cheeky::cheeky::cheeky::cheeky:

I remember falling in lust with the banker in Banco Santa Cruz, dressed in all blue in tight pants with just the right amount of maykeeyahay!
I had to lie to her about my casa not being in el Batey to get a date with her.

i was under the impression that they have cleaned up Batey lately(?). Not completely, but better than it was. Passions and a couple other massage palors were closed down, some bar owners arrested, and open bars were required to be closed in. I pass through Sosua on Pedro Clisante a couple times a month during the day and there are some chicas there, but most are dressed in normal street clothes. Someone not familiar with Sosua's reputation wouldn't even notice.

Haven't been there at night in many years, but friends of mine that live there say they are controlling it more and it's not like it was. With cruise ships set to come in next month, I would think they would want to clean up the appearance anyway. It would be pretty easy to keep most of them off the street during the day anyway.

if they get rid of the chicas, Sosua will die. I don't ever see it becoming a family oriented tourist resort town - not for a long, long time anyway and not without a major commitment by the government.

Until he broke the spell with a string of dopey smiley-faces, chic's reminiscence of the laundress on her porch in a diaphanous gown beckoning him was almost poetry

After so many years of the same situation, it is a reflection of the lack of competence of the collective competing and various interests in the Sosua area that they canot manage, maintain, or otherwise control the prostitution to their benefit.

Thier efforts seem to speak of competing interests all going in differet directions for different reasons, all at the same time. This is the type of governance on a municipal level that would get people fired in the private sector.

The "come solos" will never invest in the poverty-stricken for the sake of social justice or to give people, both men and women, an opportunity to join the formal workforce in leiu of other, more unsavory options. Combine this with the percentage, however small, of people who would prefer making a living off the seedy side of life regardless of their options, and at this intersection you have places like Boca Chica and Sosua.

Sosua is declining in prosperity for sure and a dozen never-to-be-completed projects don't help the community coffers I guess.

You can walk around the town during the day and see absolutely nothing of what's described here by fantasists and in the evening there are maybe 4 known hang-outs for those seeking solace.
The beach is packed with local families on the weekend but most of the time it's just a sleepy hollow with a tiny touch of piquancy in one street.

And too many Pizza places...

Hate to burst anyone's bubble, but I really don't see people from the cruise ships wanting to flock to Sosua, hell, most of the Canadians I talk to never even heard of Sosua. However, from what I understand, they are trying to push Snorkel/Scuba as an adventure out of Sosua, OK, so that means, these people will be taken DIRECTLY from the boat to either the beach or the company doing the adventure during the day. Basically, they will bypass the "Shenanigans" as the bus takes Dr.Rosen AROUND the stretch of Pedro where all the chicas are, so I am not sure why the mayor is sweating it?

No doubt, cruise ships are not going to turn Sosua into a tourist mecca. Like you said, I can see some snorkling tours and also some to the beach. They are cleaing up the beach area. From the it's just a short walk to where all the artists have their painting and handicrafts on display - cruise ship tourists love that kind of stuff. And from there it's a short walk up to Pedro Clisante. There are some nice restaurants there like Morua Lai. You know as many merchants as possible will want to try to get a piece of the action.

It would be pretty easy to clear that stretch of Pedro Clisante of chicas on the days the cruise shipe came in. Those who are running Sosua could make it a win-win situation. If they chase off all the chicas, you're going to see a lot of closed hotels, restaurants, bars, and other businesses. How enticing will that look?

cruise ship tourists may love the arts and crafts that are found in places like Sosua, but they do not display this affection with their wallets. in 2012, the average tourist to the caribbean and latin american caribbean ports spent an average of 5.68 on arts and crafts.

Lol, you all do know there's more than one way to get to the beach, right?

You can come in from the Charamicos side, from the back (never getting to PC) and - perish the thought - take a boat from the port directly into the bay.

Even if you had to go on PC, remember the tour is likely in the morning or very early afternoon. PC is actually pretty pleasant around then, so no worries. Especially with your very own friendly tour guide from AMET.

Frankly, I imagine most tourists will stay at the port (they've built that little beachy area just for Carnival, go to Ocean World, take the teleferico, zip line, or do the 27 waterfalls thing.

Remember, these are Carnival cruisers on weeklong itineraries. They are looking for (very) cheap, easy, family-oriented stuff do do until 5 p.m., so it just ain't gonna be that complicated.

i heard they were tearing down a lot of the old kiosks and renovating others(?). At any rate, cruise ship tourists or otherwise, if Sosua wants to attract more tourists, cleaning up that beach area should be a priority. They have more to worry about than just the chicas.
