How poor was my wife before I started with her 13 years ago? How about rats running everywhere, no refrigerator, a broken stove, unpainted cement walls, no windows, and she going out onto the street to find trash so she could cook for me over a fire inside her apartment (ventilated)?
This woman took SUCH good care of me over many years that when I sold my condo in Palm Springs, CA, I paid 1.3 million pesos for her to buy a house, take title, pay for repairs, which she is now renting for RD$5,000.00 per month--the most she can get in this poor sector where her family lives.
Her having this house has given me great relief knowing that if I predecease her, she will not be homeless. Today I found out that the government is forcing her to sell and will pay her for a new house. Her house is near MegaPuerto and they are claiming eminent domain. My wife thinks that everything will be great, that they'll pay her what her house is worth, and that she'll buy an equivalent house. I think that they'll give her a pittance--and if they robbed her with the money "hung up" and not forthcoming--I wouldn't be surprised.
So I think she's screwed, that I/we may have lost a larger portion of 1.3 million pesos and that indeed she might be homelesss if I die before her. And my "extra" money is no more. This was a one-shot deal.
My head is spinning and I'm feeling that this is a major bummer. Do you think I'm over-reacting? Any property owner here with an eminent domain sitkuation?
