That’s what I thought, but if you look at the back of the new cedula there’s a spot for “old cedula number”

Not mine since to complete the 10 years there are a few more years left. The passport expires at longer intervals than that one.

The interesting thing is that my current one expires this spring. I'm going to have to get two in one year?
And on top of that, the person behind the desk will probably ask for a "processing" fee.

All part of tracking where and what you do - maybe they will make you scan it to prove you are worthy of entering DR
If it let's you pass immigration lines I say OK.
But this would be faster ( if they actually do it) than the Cangrejo Bridge was replaced.
Maybe Paraguay and Bolivia are the last free Latin American countries ?
Cedulas are used for legal identification for business transactions, voting, etc within the country. There is nothing at all new about every DR citizen and legal resident having a cedula. What is new is the linkage of databases over time and this new much harder to copy cedula so Haitians cannot get forged ones as easily.

Passports and legal Legal Residency cards are used for crossing the border. not cedulas.

I need to renew mine in a few months after the 10 years so I will see if I get the same number.

I just got mine for 10 years last year. I sure hope they don't make me pay again for this new one. And, for 22 years with all the residency stuff my number has never changed.
Since this is at the whim of the government, I suspect you will get a new chipped cedula with the same expiration date as your current one.
But we will see how that goes. The painful part will likely be a trip to Santo Domingo to get it for legal residents.

IDENTITY CARDFOLLOW TOPIC +

How the Dominican identity and electoral card has evolved

Four changes to the official document have been applied since 1932, these will be added in 2024

  • The transformations that the identity card of the Dominican Republic has undergone. ( FREE DIARY )
Since 1932 and taking into account the project to renew the identity and electoral card for 2024, there will be a total of five changes that the official Dominican identity document has undergone .
By provision of Law 247, in 1932, only men were required to request an identity card and it was on December 14, 1940, via Law 390, when the card was established for women over 18 years of age.
All those years the so-called "little book" ID was used with the people's personal data , a photo, fingerprints and contained an individual number with a series corresponding to the demarcation, among other data .
    RELATED
    POLICY

Issuance of the new ID will begin on October 26, 2024

In 1992, through Law 8-92, it was established that the personal identity and electoral registration card would be called the identity and electoral card .
In that year, the document was renewed and the so-called blue card was issued with a validity of six years, giving way to the yellow card appearing in 1998 .
The one issued in 1998 had an identity number ; date and place of birth; occupation; blood and skin type; electoral college and location; municipality, office, book, folio, record and year of the bearer. The extension to 10 years in the validity of the ID was achieved through Law 26-01.
In 2014, the JCE approved a new identity format , with 23 security elements to prevent falsifications, which is still in force . Resident foreigners, minors, police officers and military personnel were given an identity card , without the right to vote.

The changes that the new identity card will have

The identification document is biometric, both through the use of fingerprints and facial biometrics, which allows access to all the information of the people contained in the JCE system.
The current identity and electoral cards expire this year in 2024 , but by order of the JCE they will be valid for citizens to vote in both the municipal elections in February and the congressional and presidential elections in May .

Of the work for the new ID

The renewal of the current identity and electoral card is scheduled for October 26, 2024, a process in which the directorates and commissions of the Central Electoral Board (JCE) are working. As part of the process, the Board signed an agreement with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, which, among other activities, is responsible for the standardization of technical specifications for ID cards and passports around the world.

It would make sense to have the legal residents cedula and residency card to have the same expiration date.

Perhaps they will add an expiration date...

At this hour? Of course not.
I just mean in general. The woman in the campaign doesn’t look typically Dominican which doesn’t mean she can’t be of course. They didn’t pay a Swedish model.
