By events it could be a concert, a special meeting at a particular bar where a particular football (soccer), baseball, etc match is shown; a marathon, a speech (political or otherwise), a celebration at a particular business (could be 4th of July celebration for Americans, American and Canadian Thanksgiving and other things), a fundraiser event for social causes, a competition or tournament (as a spectator), a play, etc. Not a birthday party or a wedding or wedding anniversary, funeral, etc.
For the sake of defining expat, lets say any foreigner that spends more than 3 continuous months in the DR.

What do you think could be done to encourage more expats to attend these events? Better marketing? Introduce other types of events?

Because I've only met a couple of people on here, I would like to see group events organized. There was some concert up north that I would have gone to but I don't want to go alone. My Haitian kid would not have appreciated the music, it was for us boomers. Having been to just about every location except for the extreme northeast, I would not hesitate to travel by bus/guagua anywhere to see things. My only real limitation is extreme walking, because my back can start hurting at any time and I would be a drag on the rest of the group.

As a coffee fan, I am going to the coffee thing in the ZC next Sunday.

Here in Sosua there is a greater selection of events from October thru April. We attend 2-3 events per month, sometimes more, in the busy months. In the summer, we could go months without attending an event.

I believe there is a real shortage of organised meet-up type of events in DR, especially in the capital. It's hard to meet new people. Yes there are plenty of things going on, but I'm specifically talking about events that are intended to help people make new friends and associates, events that you can go to on your own. Business Networking and socialising events, singles events, speed dating even. I am doing some research on this with a view to starting a new meet-up type of organisation in Santo Domingo, and I'd be very interested in any thoughts people have.

I would pretty much go years without attending one if I don't have a gig there. Might never attend one as they are described in the poll.

Younger people wouldn’t be likely to bother because they do this online.

If you hit the right crowd and age group, maybe you’d be onto something.

When I lived in Santo Domingo I went to events with InterNations. It’s an Expat meet up group almost exactly with the purpose you describe. It was mostly 20 and 30 something professionals, however. I don’t know if they’re still active there or not.

I have a different opinion. I know it's possible to meet people online, we all do that, but meet-up groups, business networking and events that people can attend on their own are really booming in cities in the US and in Europe. Internations is still going I think but needed a bit of passion behind it, very few events being run and very little going on.

Does Internations.org still exist?

I attend community meetings, sometimes with my husband. There is church. Just last night we had a birthday party for one of my teachers. We have swim parties with local friends. What we do is all very simple and country-style, not well organized social or sports or arts events, like in the city, but instead, we make our own events. And living here, our social activities are with primarily Dominicans, not ex-pats.

I would definitely like to do a meet up thing in the capital. Once or twice a month would be very cool.

It does but with all these things it takes someone to make the effort to organize and promote the meetings. I think internations in Santo Domingo has fallen since the pandemic

Hi, what about "Expo Santiago".....is it worth a visit this weekend?
I have been to a few of them.
The last one I attended was at the Teatro del Cibao prior to Covid.
Worth it.
I believe the last one was held inside the Parque Central order to
accommodate more vendors/ exhibitors with larger crowds.

Yes, this year it's in the Parque Central. I will go this evening.....neighbors say there are good deals to be had on all types of products from vendors.

If you can’t make it, remember it takes place until October 2.
