The peso has been around 49.5 to one US dollar for many months now...at least 6. Nobody in Sosua has a menu with US pricing as all restaurants buy in pesos, so getting US dollars is only taking advantage of the customer. Huge mistake on Frank's part. It will really turn local expats away and there are not enough tourists to spread amongst the 10 plus bar/restaurants that show sports. All the best to him, he has a lot of competition, not to mention the biggest one right on the corner.

Holy Moly people, he doesn't charge dollars!! He doesn't even carry dollars. His menu is in dollars so that he doesn't have to keep changing the prices. He's 74yrs old. Do you think he wants to keep modifying his menu!?

And the dollar has not been 49.5 for 6-months either!

Someone here needs to explain to me how if Frank gives you a bill for $6 US and lets you pay at the prevailing rate in pesos he is screwing you. In fact, you can screw him if he does not know the current exchange rate and you do know it.

$6 US @ 49.6 equals 297.6 pesos. So how does this screw the customer. You don't need a math degree here, just some common sense.

Nobody is screwing anybody. It's all about perception. The only bar that I've been to in this country that has its menu is US dollars is Kahunas and I thought it was the most stupid thing.....as do most other people. I have never seem US pricing in Santo Domingo. We are in the DR not the USA.

In Punta Cana the better restaurants will give you a bill with 3 prices on it. One in US,one in Euros, and one in Pesos. You take your choice. Is that bad for the customer? For me it is great to have that choice.

But it's the same thing Frank. It's perception.

Exactly, even if Frank gives you the best exchange rate in town as a customer you still just don't feel right about it. In the back of your mind you just keep thinking something ain't right. It will be "why is this place doing it and no one else"?

You're right. I've also seen that in Punta Cana. I also think it's expected in PC because of the large amount of tourists.

Ok, first, even if you do not know Big Frank, and you walked into his bar and sat down with him to shoot the sh1t, it's doubtful that you would pay for half of your drinks anyway. Anyone who has sat with Big Frank, conversed with him, watched football with him, will walk away screwing him over...because he won't let you pay for much.

HE's at his bar to shoot the ****, tell stories, listen to stories, get to know you, and watch girls and sports....in that order. He doesn't give a sh!t about giving away a beer here, or a drink there. What he really lives for is conversation, getting to know people, having a drink, and having fun. He's not there to try and nickel and dime anyone.

Yes SKY but Punta Cana is dealing with full fledge tourists and does it as a convenience for the tourist. Was at a show in Hard Rock Café in Santo Domingo a few weeks ago and my bill also had the option to pay pesos, dollars, or euros. I scratched my head and wondered which of the three is the cheapest...………. I paid with a CC and said F this crap. LOL

What food is on the menu? How about a few pics of the place in progress?

Never met Big Frank but he seems like a cool dude and I wish him the best. (never met the little frank either, LOL)

You're missing out. PC has instantly improved with their new presence.

What Sky means is that each bill that a person receives--and this is true for a lot of restaurants in SD as well--at the bottom of your bill is a breakdown of different currencies that are accepted--just in case someone wants to pay either in pesos, Euros, or Dollars. It's just an exchange rate. Nothing more. So that people have an idea of what they owe in case they are from a different country and are carrying different money on them.

Sometimes, when people find out that they can pay in either Euros or Dollars, they're happy because they don't have to run across the street or down the street, looking for places to exchange their money.

It just gives the consumer more choices in how they can pay. Nothing more.

No one is out to rip anyone off.

I wonder if you get your bill in dollars, you can pay with your cc in dollars? This has become a new thing. I paid for my groceries in Playero and paid with my dollar debit card from my UK bank. The verifone machine gave me the option to pay in either USD or DOP. I chose dollars and checked my statement a few days later, the exact amount in dollars was debited from my account.

Why not have a currency exchange for US dollars at least right in the bar? At the highest going rate - Sosua this is now 49.6. That way people stop to change a hundred or two then drink $20+ in beer and pub food. Cheaper than advertising.
