DK.. your debt was bought by a collection agency. They buy debts that the original holder can't collect for pennies on the dollar.
Your 80k debt may have been bought for a couple hundred bucks or less. They then try to find you so they can get as much out of you as they can.
Understand this, they got it for next to nothing, so they will be willing to take a lot less than you may imagine.
If you want to clear your mind, call the collection agency and ask them to set up a payment plan. Find out what's the minimum amount they will accept.
Right now, this bill is a huge ding on your credit score. You don't want that. Pay the collection folks something, and it will change the "fail" score to much better rating. It won't be perfect, but it's a big step in the right direction.
Last, go see a doctor again about the pills. Tell him/her that you want something else. There are other ways to skin a cat.
