Herd immunity can be achieved from a combination of actual infections and vaccinations, albeit with more deaths and serious long term effects with the fewer vaccinations.
Keep in mind that the deaths from infection are about 5 out of 1,000 which is far less than the normally stated confirmed case deaths which are in the 2 to 3 out of 100 range. That is because far more people are infected than are confirmed to be infected.
The US vaccine hesitancy will get to herd immunity with perhaps more infections and illness complications than other countries.
I have always said the CV19 is here, there, and everywhere to stay. Nobody yet knows about how long immunity from infection or vaccinations lasts.

An update (and rant on mild frustration).
Did the home covid test on the first day, as instructed. Today is day 7, and they still don't have the results.
The frustration is that tomorrow I have to take the second test (day 8) and legally you must remain in quarantine until you have the negative result back. So in practice that means because of the utter incompetence of the government's choice of testing (switch health), the 14 day quarantine will end up being more than 14 days as weekends the lab is closed. It's likely going to be at least 18 days.
