Erquidenio Balbuena Agueda was mayor of the northeastern small beach and fishing town of Las Galeras in Samana from 2010-2016. On 11 October 2021, the National Drug Control Agency (DNCD) and the Attorney General Office included Balbuena Agueda in the three men extradited together for drug trafficking and money laundering. Others are Amauris Peña García and Ramón Antonio Ciprian Espinal who were sent to Puerto Rico on a private plane that departed from San Isidro Air Force Base in eastern Santo Domingo.

The three are accused of being part of an international drug trafficking network and are being requested by US authorities to answer for several crimes against them in Puerto Rico.
