Here's one for you MommC...
This week I received a text msg on my phone (in Spanish) saying that they had no balance and would I recharge their PHONE complete with directions and the number (not one I recognized). How many people do you think they sent that to and did anyone fall for it?
Last year, a woman called our housekeeper and asked to speak with me. She asked to borrow US$10,000. I told her I don't have that kind of money and then had my maid verify that indeed I understood...yes I did, but then she asked my maid "Would she consider only loaning $1000USD?" That night on one of the local radio stations there was a news-report on the scam (THAT they carried but not Matilda's shooting!)
I'm actually quite a softy when it comes to giving what I can. I support several of the kids in SPM who dutifully watch my car--even when I don't have money because they know I WILL give them $ the next time. So, it's not a clear yes or no in terms of giving to local populations.
