I’ve noticed thru my Santiago travels that santiago has 10 maybe 20 times more “upscale” gated communities then Santo Domingo even thought Santo Domingo does have 10 times more “upscale” TORRES. Than santiago , however I was thinking if I had a choice between a gated community and a high rise torre i would choose “upscale” gated community on a heartbeat , look at the upside of living on gated communities : More security as far as strangers getting in , you get to know your neighbors easier than a stand alone torre , NO one who doesn’t live inside the complex would drive by your house or building , the streets outside your gated house / building are usually in great condition due to community maintenance , More security for you and your family from crime outside your Complex , camera all over the gated community streets , 24/7 watchman walking around , etc etc etc.

DOES ANYONE ELSE AGREE that gated “upscale” communities/ complex are overall better than stand alone “upscale” TORRES ?

Neither. Single family home. Great landlord/lady is a requirement.

Nope. Wrong. Clearly you have lived in neither. Where do you live? Why do you live there? What work do you do? Where? What restaurants do you go to in the capital? Tell us a bit more about who "Rey" is. Why did you chose "Rey" as your screen name. Does your Mom live with you? Have you lived in Santiago? Do you prefer it overSD? Do you have a GF, wife, partner? Are you afraid of living in SD? What do you have for back-up electrical power Rey? Can I call youRey? Is there an area, like a "food court" for food trucks in SD? I hear they are quite good. Heard that from a top chef friend of mine. Have you been? Which one do you like the best? Have you looked at the torres in Naco? Spectacular. My dentist is in Naco. He's the best. Are you familiar with Naco? Would you feel better carrying a gun? Think about "prevention detention" in this country Rey. At the onset of the "event" I think you BOTH go to the dungeons. Your style?
Entounces, Mr. KIng, feel free to share some of your knowledge on life in the DR. We look forward to it. Better than your one query a day each and every week. Could be fun.

What’s your tipple?
Not relevant...that will all come out in The Book of Rey. You know the book of Ruth that came out a couple of thousand years ago became a best seller. Still read today by billions of people. Maybe The Book of Rey will be a winner. Lets wait.

To return to the question asked by the OP, I think a Torre is nicer. You're higher up, so the air is fresher and you have a nicer view. It's safer by a long way - there is only one door to get in, so it's much easier to police. But you have to pick your Torre. There are many that allow AirBnB and that's not good, there will be noisy parties, maybe in the apartment above yours. And in the really upscale ones, I personally think you get a lot of really unfriendly people who are seriously up themselves. I've always wanted to live in Santiago, but I'd choose a Torre over a gated community anytime.

For all the reasons you mention are why I would not live in a tower. Less safe in an Earthquake, only one escape, too high, too much noise from above, and you have to walk softly yourself.

Nope. After reading you well thought out posting on what a forum board is I thought you might want to "share, contribute, and be part of a community". Guess that was definition only with no intent. Carry on king.

Well like I said you need to choose your tower carefully. If you live in a penthouse you don't have anyone above you. If you choose a tower that doesn't allow AirBnB it's far less noisy. And the chances of an earthquake are way less than the chances of being attacked and injured / killed in a private home. One more advantage of a tower is that they take care of things like water, gas and electricity. They maintain the planta so you always have electricity.

But I do agree it's a matter of taste and what works for you. Anyone with animals should not live in a tower.

Living in a tower with full amenities as you described might not be affordable for most. Real 24 hour security , full maintenance staff that responds with-in hours costs money. Twenty-four hours of lights, ac, and planta is a premium offer.
The key to this is dependent on the ownership of the complex. That's easy to check if they have been around for a while. However, I would be suspect of any group that makes these promises without having a verifiable track record.

I guess the adage of "You get what you pay for" applies here.
