Generic Resort Booze - where to buy?

Hi guys,

Does anyone know where you can buy the "generic" alcohol that they serve at the AI's? I am getting married next month in Santo Domingo, and we have employed a bartender, but need to get the booze. We figured this way would be the most economical, but we haven't the foggiest idea on where to get it. I checked La Sirena last time I was there, but didn't see it. Is there a brand name to this generic booze?

Also, where would one go about getting a large quantity of Presidente? Do you think they would offer discounts for larger purchases? Does anyone know how much a keg would be? There will be 80 or so at the reception.

Any insight is much appreciated.

Thanks,
Kate

oh lord i wouldn't want to be at your wedding, that booze is gross and an insult to Dominicans!!!

I asked for a shot of tequila once and it tasted like pure rubbing alcohol, yuk!!

It would be an insult to dominicans, just so you know, they (we? :-S ) rate a party not by the food, but by the quality of the drinks served. like as in ... "ooooooooooo it was OK they has white label." or "It was so great they has black label and absolut vodka" ... i nknow it sucks but its true... Presidente can be bought in bulk from the manufacturer, in other words go to the presidente factory, they will sell you kegs or all the bottles you will need.
I didn't think it was my place to say anything, but now that you've opened the can of worms, I have to agree.
Trying to pass off cheap booze to wedding guests is totally unacceptable.
Better to invite less people, than to do that.

Hey this is all good to know. we do have a guest list of about 40, but knowing what would probably happen, the odds are at 80 people showing up.

Thanks for the sound advice. I would hate to look like the cheap-o bride. soooo, now the questions remains...how to do most of this on a "smaller" budget. How much would a decent brand run me for about 80 ppl. Lets say, one type of vodka, one type of whisky, and some rum. Is brugal acceptable? I have some budget to play around with, so i am open to anyones suggestions.

Thanks again, you guys are a lifesaver

Sorry, I want to clarify. I don't expect anyone to go around pricing bottles for me, but I know that although we have invited 40 people, double that will probably show. So...speaking from others experience...what have you done/seen/point of view as far as alcohol at a wedding reception. Would a keg be too much?
with 1 whiskey, 1 rum and 1 vodka...is that enough selection? More? less?

I am left in the dark here and looking for guidance...Thanks to everyone so far

where are you having this reception? are you hosting these people yourselves without a caterer? 1 bottle each of whiskey/rum/vodka will not be enough for 40 people [let alone 80]

i saw the keg comment but i also doubted availability....although resorts have presidente on kegs dont they? maybe they know where to get them?
methinks the guests would go through the liquor first before beer...if thats the case those bottles are gone in less than an hour! LOL

I would go to the local colmado and make a deal with them, to buy a dozen bottles of each (less if they are bigger bottles) and have them accept the return of any unopened bottles, perhaps with a 5% restocking charge.
Perhaps make a similar deal on the beer.
Going short during the event would potentially ruin the event, and one never knows if everyone will be jumping on the whiskey, or the rhum, who knows ahead of time.....

i was at a wedding recently where all that was served was presidente and johnny walker...apparently the thought process is that they can afford the decent scotch (started with a bottle on each table) but weren't so rich that they would also serve absolut, bailey's, tequila, gin, cognac, cordials, etc. I found it interesting..not a bottle of brugal to be found anywhere...another thing I found rather odd was the dinner was basically an American Thanksgiving-type meal...Turkey, stuffing, potatoes, etc....

I would, however take Rocky's advice and make sure there is enough of everything...but limit the choices. Most liquor stores and colmados will allow returns of unused bottles. And I dont think there's a problem also offering rum...I guess in some circles it's considered "low-class" but it is more or less the "national drink", and much more inexpensive then everything else. Whatever you do, DON'T serve "generic" liquor!

Hi everyone,

Thanks so far for everyone's input. When I was speaking of the rum/whisky/vodka I was talking about more than one bottle, but now with your suggestions, I think maybe having Presidente plus one or two decent brands of hard liquor on hand may be the best bet. One thing for sure is that I will not be serving the generic booze.

I will look into getting a keg of President, and then maybe some Johnny and Brugal as the hard alcohol choices. Rocky, your idea sounds like the most convienient. I will definitely look into that.

Our hall is in Santo Domingo, I forget the street, but will update tonight with more info.

Thanks again to all,
Kate

Anyone have any ideas how much bottles of booze I may need to cover 70-80 ppl?

Thx,
Kate

Whatever you think it may be...double it!! Seriously...that's why it's important to have an arrangement where you can return the un-used alcohol...but if you do this, find someone you trust to dole out the booze as bottles (even beer) have a way of making it into trunks of caterers/bartenders cars...

It has been my experience that Dominican women like to drink those drinks like the ORO whatwever it is, wine also. We had a Christsmas party for around 40 people- 12 bottles of wine, 6 bottle of liquior(the oro stuff) 2 Large bottles of Rum(bermudez) and 4 cases of beer. Lasted about 4 hours and then we ran out, but it seems about the right amount for how long we wanted the party to go. I would first ask the question - do you know the guests - upper income, lower income, religious or not....etc. I would have plenty of pop and juice available also.

Hey David,

I haven't even though of that. I will have to find a trustworthy bartender. I was thinking maybe 20-25 bottles of Johnny and 10-15 of Brugal and a keg of presidente. Thoughts?
