And for those, who like to speculate....

"... un apartamento que hab?a rentado a dos ciudadanas estadounidenses en Cabarete.

Por el hecho est?n detenidas las dos estadounidenses y tres dominicanos...."

Of course, he should have never left his office. :cheeky:
He should have known, collecting rent is a no-no.... :tired:

Conclusion: his own fault.......... :tired:

donP

Collecting rent half naked in what is probably one of his vacant properties where there is no rent to collect?

No one deserves to be murdered, but caution is important when you live among people who as you say 'will kill you for a few pesos'.

Finely observed, Watson......

So what's your point Sherlock?

The guy was collecting rent in an alternative fashion, the girls guy found out and arranged payback, hardly unusual as far as murders go over here. No he didn't deserve it but he should have been more careful.

You don't seem to conclude your opinions, only put a slant to others.

Rest in peace and many condolences to his friends and family. I am sure whatever happened he wasn't "asking for it". Does anyone know who the two Americans who seem to be involved are?

Just wrong time, wrong place?

I am sure whatever happened he wasn't "asking for it".

From all I know, he certainly wasn't.
My (German) sources say, he was a very nice guy, never seen in bars, led a quiet life......
But well, some will speculate on that also.

With this German guy, the African student and the poor Swiss man I really wish I can cancel my trip next month to the DR. I am not saying I am afraid or anything like that, but I am a "information junkie" I do not like when something happened and I do not know about. I am the same way about Costa Rica I need to know all the info, so I am not out of touch for what is going on.

I really wish I can fly down to SD pick my daughter up and take her somewhere fun like Disney Land in California or the zoo in San Diego. I hate that she has to share a country with people purpose in life is to rob and killed people.

At one time going to the Dominican Republic was so much fun, but now it feels like a chore that I wish I can get out of. I haven't even arrived and I am already thinking how I can speed the 5 days up. I was somewhat looking forward to the trip over the holiday next month, but this German guy death was the last straw.

The sad thing is the police give these guys the green light to operate like this, because it is something in it for them. How many times have Dominicans committed crimes in the USA and tried to escape to the DR, only to find the USA travel right down and bring their a$$es right back to the USA.

I don't think there is any need to cancel trips. Odds that anything could happen if you are simply coming over to spend quality time with your child are tiny.

So we conclude, whores, drugs, alcohol, traffic and bad luck are what kill people here, no one dies of old age. So as long as you are not unlucky then I presume you won't be a mongering, drug induced, alcoholic, F1 wannabe superstar then you should have a great time.

The murder of expats or foreigners in the pop/SOS/cab area seems to come on a relay. It is almost as if someone or some people keep leaving, then appearing, kill a few expats then vanish again for a few months. Sounds odd and maybe it is just me, but the regularity seems to have an irregular pattern to them. It's picking up again, or is that just me?

Maybe they are booking the flight to DR three months in advance to get it cheaper.

25 vs. 0.8

I don't think there is any need to cancel trips.

Indeed, simply change the destination. :cheeky:

Odds that anything could happen (...) are tiny.

Probability, however, is relatively high.

"Unlawful death purposefully inflicted on a person by another person" 'happens' to 25 people per 10,000 inhabitants here in the DR.
For Spain or Germany that figure is 0.8.

Which just proves, that crime happens everywhere, doesn't it???? :squareeye

How long have you been here, has anyone attempted to kill you? No? Me neither, nor anyone else I know. Probability is not high, just higher!

HUG I am very careful while I am in SD. I now rent from a guy in Boca Chica who pick me up and drive to BC. I take my a quick cruise around BC( I don't know why) but I always do. I then head to my hotel for example if I am staying at Antiguo Hotel Europa in the Colonial Zone I tell everyone I am at Napolitano on the malecon. If people ask how long you are staying I will say 7 days, but it is really 5 days.

When I exchange my money I go to the same bank I always go to in the Colonial Zone. I can't tell you how many people have told me they know a place with a better exchange rate, but I always go to a bank and personal I somewhat trust.

No Dominican or Haitian have any idea when I am arriving I just show up at there house and surprise them. We sit and talk drink beer and eat, and sometimes they will ask how long are you hear for this time, and I would say 7 days little do they know my flight leave the next day.

I do not do all of this because Dominicans and Haitians are bad people I do it because of the lack of money they have. I am 98% sure my friends in the DR are good people, but that 2% is all it takes to end the life of JMB773 therefore I always want to be one step ahead. A lack of money can change people from good to bad.

Keeping a low profile and minding your own business helps ,but it may not be enough is some cases. A man living in small towns like in DR should be able to tell when something is out of place, or something is just not right. The WORST thing anybody can do is let their guard down because they feel like they are keeping a low profile. Believe or not criminals are not as dumb as people make them out to be. Example:

A criminal can watch a victim for awhile and tell if he or she will make a good target, and what he or she is wearing is not as important as you may think. They are plenty of Dominicans that dress like a million bucks, but criminals know they may only have 1000RD in their pocket. Also they know how people are instructed not to carry around large amounts of money when visiting a place like DR.

HUG when four men are sitting around planning the robbery of a man called HUG, they already have it worked out way before they approach you if you are going to live or die. There is nothing you can do once a gang of criminal LOCK IN on you because you have something they want.

Funny you have those preservation traits, I do exactly the same and when someone asks me where I live, I tell them where I used to live. Problem is many people are not wise and trust very easily, trusting a smile is very dangerous as everyone has them here.

I was inside, he was outside.

Neither?
Wait, I had not answered yet! :bunny:

There was one incident only (in 17 years).
I don't know what the guy was up to when he climbed up on my roof.
But then he must have heard the Remington 12 gauge being pumped...

Normal life, right? :paranoid:
