So Canada just confirmed its first case of the new British covid strain.
Now let's see if DR bans flights from Canada.

Britain and Europe are reacting to the new strain of Covid by closing borders nationally and internationally. Until they get a better handle on the potential of this new strain, expect more travel chaos. It hasn’t hit North America yet but no one knows for sure. All UK scientists are saying at this point is it appears to be no worse or infectious than the previous strain. Regardless Canadian borders will not be closed to Canadian citizens. More stringent entry requirements once Canadians arrive in Canada, may be required. Brits have been arriving in the DR through Spain when that was allowed.
I know some Brits who were travelling to the DR for Xmas through other airports into Punta Cana. I’m not sure if they are restricted from leaving Britain now because of the new strain. Just another piece of the Covid puzzle that reinforces the need for masks, distancing, and restricted socializing.

Viruses mutate all the time in order to adapt and survive. It's natural. Happens every year with the flu virus. That's why they say you should take your flu shot every year.

Go figure.
Im pretty sure the new strain had been spreading in Canada for quite a while, they just hadn't identified it until now.

Yes. Found in the Durham area of Ontario. Two people that didn’t travel anywhere. That may indicate the variants are breeding within countries, not being transported internationally. The worldwide pandemic infection numbers, now around 70 million, guarantees other new variants will occur worldwide. The Covid battle will be similar to the annual influenza battle. The flu virus is constantly breeding variants. Pharmaceutical companies will need to produce an annual vaccine that targets the majority of the Covid variants because the current suite of Covid vaccines are only be effective to a point.

I'm not afraid of the "virus" ,my concern is the Canadian govt. Tonight they announced via the Minister(not sure which one, I was distracted), that anyone coming into Canada must have a PCR test three days prior to entering the country with negative results.
This in no way negates the 14 day quarantine required.
This particular Minister sounded quite angry and stated more will come should the current or worse situations prevail.
So, they are making if difficult to travel to the DR. Or anywhere.
My suspicions, from watching various news sources here in Canada, is we are going to go full bore UK lock down in January.
Will you be allowed to return from the DR? I dunno. This Minister was saying individuals keep traveling for personal reasons, not out of necessity. That's when the anger appeared.

With this new PCR test requirement that Canada is pushing (where on earth in DR will i be able to get tested with results within 72 hours? ) + the fact that DR is going on full New World Order lockdown until January 10 at least, my trip in Puerto plata and SDO just sounds pointless now. I won't be staying in those nice resorts where you can eat and drink and party until late at night.
+ those Entry and Exit forms to fill out for DR... More hassle.

Will wait until tomorrow, MARC GARNEAU or whoever that Canadian minister is will be announcing the details of the new rules for Canadian travelers, if it sounds like too much of a hassle and too much planning to do, i will cancel my trip.

Yes, that Minister, bat $hit mad I say ....Im scheduled for the airport in early February. I must travel Vancouver to Toronto. Westjet has cancelled my planned flight to the DR so we end up with a layover of 10 hours in TO. Then off to POP.
I also may now cancel my trip. With the DR economy via all forms of entertainment grinding to a halt, what's the point?
Throw in the brain scrub Covid test when we fly home, which by the way, swabs your DNA , just saying, it may be a blessing to be stranded in the Dominican Republic.
It's all up in the air- will they evacuate Canadians from the DR if needed? Is it worth the risk?

Later today the CDN federal gov is supposed to announce exactly how the PCR test is going to be implemented. So far it's as ridiculous as the hair brained Dominican restrictions that get implemented and cancelled within 3 days.
