Getting stuck in the DR

I don't know a lot of expats here that came from sunny warm places. You could be stuck in some god forsaken US hillbilly town up to your ass in snow or you could be on this island you choose to come to. The curfew can be bit of a pain but with a bit of planning I'm sure we can survive.

My biggest problem these days is my mechanic has had my car for over 2 months and it's still not ready. I will definitely be looking for a new mechanic if he ever gets the little beater running again.

Exactly. I don't like stupid at all and the curfew is definitely stupid. But no matter where you go, there will always be stupid and unfairness. As a retiree, the DR is so much better than what the USA has to offer. Even with this stupid curfew, life here is freer and cheaper. I could pack up tomorrow if I so chose. I choose to stay. Of course, having a kid here now makes that choice academic, but even if I didn't have him, I would stay.

England and Scotland just went into lockdown. My wife is from England and as much as I like it there I would sooner be stuck here. $12 dollars a pint for beer if you can find it just isn't reasonable.

Have you seen the car, or better yet the car and the mechanic together?
Quite possibly he borrowed it to visit relatives across the nation over the course of the Navidad. ;)

Thank you for the car suggestions. I have seen the car. The problem is he can't pinpoint the actual issue. He has found several other issues and fixed them but not the main one.
It's frustrating that it's taking so long but we have mooched a few rides and rented a couple times but it still beats a western Canada prairie winter.
I still don't feel "stuck" here as there are several choices to go back to Canada but the CDN government is making it more difficult because they can.

Great news. My car is back and as of today it runs great. I will sell it to the first guy that shows up with cash. Pesos, USD, CDN, Euros, whatever. PM for details if you want a beater with 65,000km no accidents with a manual transmission.

As far as I can see we will be here to at least May. Once the Americans realize that they need a PCR test to go home the lineups will slow down and the process will be easier. We are still not in any hurry to go back. The food supply is still great, no shortage of rum so all is good. Cheers

Sorry for the delay. 2007 VW Gol. 4 door hatchback, manual transmission, 1.6l, AC, newer tires and brakes. 65,000 Km (40,000 miles)
I'm in the Bavaro area. Asking 185,000RD (3200 USD)
PM for pictures or more info.
I bought it from a disgruntled travel rep in 2008. Need a bigger car as more and more family is showing up

If you were to have any downturn in your health, even a tiny bit.. where would you like to be? Which country will afford a better chance at recovery from any health related issues? Three strokes in two years is heavy duty and I imagine you don't have a sense of security "getting stuck here".
Honestly, knowing both systems and being able to afford the Private Clinics here ; by choice based upon your question is unquestionably the DR,
On the other hand I do require specialized treatment on spine do to broken back from explosion 50 years ago. This is a Veterans Issue. Veterans Affairs Canada just told me that they would cover all costs for treatment done in DR. The choice is mine.
SO, I will be looking for a Neurologist who specializes in lower back nerve damage.

Yes, receipts. Open an on line account with << My VAC Account >> contact Candice at VAC Foreign Countries Desk and she will talk you through it. You tell them what you need then they agree (everytime) and you pay up front and they reimburse upon submission of receipts.
PM me and we can discuss more privately.
