Yes, this scary when you could easily pay many thousands above and beyond the normal DR high prices as is so easy to do a mileage rollback, and what Dominican dealer wont do it for a slightly used car. None!!! The question is there a way to check to see if the mileage is correct??? Carfax seems only to work on USA or EURO imports. What about a KIA or Hyundai that has come from Korea new to Viamar and then sold later on? I am looking at one that doesn't show in Carfax, the dealer says because came new thru the legal KIA dealer here Grupo Viamar. Of course rarely does anyone have their past maintenance records and most little shops don't issue an invoice with mileage on it either, just the sticker on your W/S. How does one checkout one of these?

Some makes/models keep data encrypted. It is a sort of quiet secret with some of the car manufacturers. The same way that a cars VIN is embedded in multiple places on the vehicle....data that is shared with law enforcement should the need arise.

As to your issue, check with Viamar to see if any service or warranty work has been performed. Most dealers are happy to supply that data if they feel it may lead to a sale.

Short of that, check the gas/brake pedals for signs of wear....but the best method is to look at the original floor mat for signs of wear under the drivers right heel area. That is the number 1 tell. Or if floor mats are used...then look at them. Carpet is much easier to assess than rubber....but it is possible.

Not sure about Kia in the DR, but Kia here had such a bad rep rior to being bought by Hyundai, that when the deal was completed Kia began giving 10 yr/100,000 mile powertrain warranties. The cars themselves have come a long way...but they still have a way to go to be in Toyota's/Hond's class...or to even be even with some of the better rated Hyundai models.

Good Luck.

Those are dream cars for exporters, high mileage newer cars. US dealers do not want them due to high mileage....so the exporters buy them cheap, export them and roll back the odometer.

Rolling back odometers is so easy. With the right equipment (easily bought online) it is almost childs play;

any kid with a laptop can roll back a digital odometer.

The OP should teach in her home country and save some money before coming to the DR. Weird question for a 1st post.

Toyotas are a good choice here in the DR.
The used parts are EVERYWHERE, and very cheap.
Many models use the same parts as well.
A Corola if a sedan, or a SUV if you want something roomier/safer.

OK, so it was the Land Rover Dealer here that told me that Land Rover odometers can't be rolled back. (backstepping,as playacaribe2 starts frantically looking for a land rover youtube rollback video) lol

If it wasn't you, I'd say he was just desperate to sell you a car......

Miles don't matter much in The DR. Assume ALL cars have the odometer rolled back (Standard procedure for dealers). Repair is cheap. Get yourself a mechanic and pay him a few bucks to check the car for you before you buy it. THAT will save you more than anything else in the long run. As long as the engine and transmission are good everything else is easy to repair and won't cost you and arm and a leg as it does in The US.

the mileage does not matter until you need to change your timing belt at 100,000 miles, and the odometer shows 63,000, when you really have 97,000.

kaboom!

Just get it changed when you buy the car that way you don't have to worry about how many miles it has...It's cheap enough.

very true, suarezn. i always did that, before anything. sadly, people in the DR do not have a word for maintenance in their lexicon.
