It has taught us how to wash our hands. Imagine all the sicknesses we will be spared from thanks to this new habit we are acquiring.

It's amazing how it requires the arrival of The Spectre of Death for people to learn to wash their damn hands...

Clean, clear water in Venice canals
Swans aswimmin' in them

No air pollution over China

Dolphins in the cruise ship ports

As the rest of the world catches up the China severity, commuters, school runs etc will reduce vehicle pollution
Air travel has been reduced

The carbon footprint will be smaller

It will help normalise working from home, or part-time working from home for commuters. This will have a positive impact on quality of life and on the environment.

I was working partly remotely, as soon as things got serious, I worked from home full-time. While many people are loosing their job or not getting paid, I don't have to worry about that. I realize that I am very fortunate and I am thankful.

Maybe since the Chinese threatened to withhold drugs, the world will wise up and take production of all drugs and their precursors out of that country. Chinese communists are unreliable and don't produce reliable products.
Time to start going for cheapie cheapie everything.

This is one of the most important lessons we can learn. The only thing we can depend on from China is oppression (to their own people) and sickness. We need to get essentials' manufacturing back to the North America and Europe.

What about to the DR? We are in the backyard and need jobs. Now is the time to rethink depending mostly on tourism...

DR could be a base for manufacturing drugs, as was Puerto Rico, but unreliable and too expensive power together with poor quality water are also the reasons many pharmaceuticals left PR. And an inefficient workforce.
But it's worth a try if there is a good source of clean well water near real 24/7 power ?

What's stopping the DR from diversifying the economy? Oh yeah, corruption and an indifferent attitude. You just can't seem to get anything substantial started here unless everyone else's pockets are full first. Then these same officials keep coming around ringing the doorbell checking to see if everything is ok? Which it's not so round and round it goes.

No major manufacturing here until all that changes and needed materials can be imported reliably and cheaply.

Sounds like an opportunity for drug manufacturing in Free Zones...IF the local edumacation system can supply the required skilled labor.

Which is doubtful.

First things first.

The majority of pharmaceuticals available in RD are produced in South America, not China. Read the fine print.

Well they find enough clean water to make beer and rum. Water can be cleaned quite easily; called water treatment and filtration.
CV-19 is a wake-up call for DR; I think you will see a very willing work force.
I am all for it!
Even if it is a bit more expensive to produce the Pharmaceutical Companies will gouge us anyway.
Great idea.

One of our main internet providers just gave all Canadians an extra 10GB free of charge to enable people to self isolate and work from home. I expect a lot of this will be used for Porn but their heart is in the right place. Might be something for DR internet providers to consider. Now if only the price of a bottle of rum would drop like the price of gas.
