The Dominican government says it is proceeding with the construction of the Santo Domingo Metropolitan Train that would connect the Olympic Center in the capital city to the Las Americas International Airport. The fast transport would open areas east of the capital city for development. The train would have capacity for more than 20,000 commuters per hour.

The Central American Economic Integration Bank (BCIE) has announced it is willing to finance the public-private alliance that is being organized by the Public-Private Alliance Agency (DGAPP).

Las Terrenas
3 years to complete this massive job?

I bet 13 years

The government rebuilding of Fisherman's village in Las Terrenas is on the 3rd year and it's still not finished

I can see the taxi union protesting already
i was thinking the same. When I first arrived in the country they wouldn't dare make this type of announcement.

Doubt it will be finished within the next decade.

The taxi at the Las Americas airport is OK now with Uber picking up their passengers at the same airport, the only difference is that the taxi is on the ground level (arrivals) and to take Uber you have to go upstairs (Departures level). And most people who go from SD to the airport, use Uber now, not any taxi company. I doubt the taxi union will protest against the train.

Honestly I hope they will never start this project, because if they do, they will paralyze all the traffic around around Centro Olimpico (according to the map in the first post), and it will be a total disaster for years of this construction, and the area is already a constant traffic jam.

Hey, they gotta finish the Sosua Beach Plazas, the Cabarete Bypass, and the Amber Coast Highway first!
Yeah, that's logical that before starting another project, let's finish the previous one. But this is DR, so they want to start as many projects as possible and then never finish any of them.

By the way, just look at the map of the project. The first station at Centro Olimpico is where Naco ends. All other stations between Naco and the Airport are in ghettos. Who will go from there to the airport? What 20,000 passenger per hour? What 200,000 per day? Where to, the airport? 200,000 passengers per day from 19 stations in poorest barrios to the airport? And where will they go from there, this airport transports 200,000 passengers per month maybe, but not per day. Another totally absurd project by this bunch-of-clowns Government.

Los Frailes is huge and there are a ton of public cars moving folks into the city every day.

Lol. How many of them are going to the airport every day?
If they won't go to the airport but will go into the city, so their last stop will be at Centro Olimpico, then tons of public cars will pick them up there? The area around Central Olimpico can't handle any more cars.

You think people in poor areas do not go to the airport? People in poor areas do not travel or possibly work at the airport?

I don't see any free space where they can build tracks for this train around Centro Olimpico, unless this miracle train will be able to fly over the buildings. (I can see Centro Olimpico from my balcony so I know what I am talking about).

And on their map Centro Olimpico is not there it should be. Just compare it to Google Maps if you don't know the area.

The whole thing is absurd.

"The train would have capacity for more than 20,000 commuters per hour".

It says it would have the capacity; I do not see where it says there will be that many.

It says Se estima 200,000 pasajeros per dia. Right in the picture with the map. This airport transports 200,000 passengers (more or less) per month, not per day.

The point is that many countries have trains from the city to the airport, BUT those airports transport much more passengers. Nobody builds a train to transport a few airport employees, or a few passengers per hour. For this Las Americas airport a couple of buses every hour would me more than enough. And that could be done with Caribe Tours and Metro from their existing bus terminals.
