Drivers using the Km 9 intersection in northern Santo Domingo need to set aside more time or try to schedule travel in the very early morning or at night to avoid the major traffic jams due to major road construction at the site.

Noticias SIN reported on how commuters faced significant traffic congestion on the Duarte Highway on Wednesday, 4 September 2024 as construction work continues at Kilometer 9. The situation on Wednesday was aggravated by a large truck that became stuck under an underpass on John F. Kennedy Avenue, adding to the travel woes of motorists and public transportation users.

Bus drivers serving the Los Alcarrizos, Pedro Brand, and Los Girasoles areas reported increased fuel costs due to the extended travel times caused by the construction projects.

The Km 9 intersection is under major construction to incorporate 14 lanes and several roadworks...

I would think most? It's basically a requirement to go through to get to Santiago and those parts of the country from Santo Domingo.
Is it before the bypass going into Santo Domingo from Santiago ? I'm going to the SD airport from Santiago.

I'm sure that those who use Autopista Duarte know where the construction and bottleneck is, but other than that....? Wouldn't it just be easier to say what major intersection it's close to, then almost everyone would know, even many who don't live in SD.

KM 9 is Autopista Duarte and Ave. Luperon.
Pinturas is Ave 27 de Febrero and Isabela Aguillar (Plaza de Bandera roundabout)
KM 12 is the Malecon/30 de Mayo where Ave. Luperon starts (going North where the "Pulga" used to be)

Honestly, I think they're doing both at the same time to get them done and over with instead of one after the other.

I'll bet almost everyone here who has ever been to SD knows where Av. Luperon is.

When traveling down to the Capital, Km9 is where my journey in traffic via Caribe always ends. Hop off and straight down to the metro station. About 20 minutes to Taino @ Cristo Rey on the North line and 25 minutes to Mega Centro in SDE/ for the carritos to Invivienda.

This is at the entrance of the city at Km9 of the highway. Coming from Santiago, this is after the bypass. The bypass is at the Km28.

To avoid this, just use the bypass and avoid entering Santo Domingo and you'll skip all of that madness.

My son was coming back from a softball game near Angelina (closer to SFM). He said they sat in traffic for over an hour plus going into Santo Domingo.

I wonder how many people, even those in SD, know where Km 9 is?

Everyone who knows SD knows where Km 9 is. It's a big intersection and everyone refers to it as "La nueve". It's where Duarte meets Luperon. There's a metro station there and the buses coming in from the north always stop there as one of the first stops when they arrive in the city.

This. All locals refer to and know it as el nueve without reference to the closest intersection.

Because that area is 9th Kilometer of the old DR1. That's the reference.

Mile 0 or Km 0 of the whole country starts at Parque Independencia at Zona Colonial. From there count 9 kms. That's it. Simple.

For reference, the image is the old route of DR1 highway in Santo Domingo: Palo Hincado > Simon Bolivar Ave > 30 de Marzo Ave. > San Martin and ends at JFK.
