Mercury: last september had a single-room there, additional cost for a guest 10US$. Good breakfast included, also for your quest so you can consider the 10$ as a fee for the breakfast for the guest. Great location, you can sit outside on the terace and the girls a waving their hands to you from el Conde. Within walkin distance to Plaza Espana.
Palacio: havn't been there, but this was there email-answer "Hi, yes you have to pay 15 dollars additional for an invited."

Hi:

I have stayed many times at the El Conde Hotel in the heart of the Colonial Zone. It is a very comfortable place with an outdoor cafe looking across Columbus Square to the oldest church in the new world. The staff is very friendly and efficient. The rooms are big and not expensive, about 75usd per night. Ask for a room with balcony overlooking Calle Conde. From here you are walking distance to all the historical sites and restaurants. I have also stayed at the Jarguas Hotel on the Malecon. The rooms are very nice and the pool area with outdoor bar is very relaxing. They also have a casino on the premises. It is a nice facility with ocean views. Rooms run about $125.usd per night. Good luck and have fun.

Do you bring your own tinaco and inversor?
Several people have reported they had no running water or power recently.

"longer walk" ????? Can i take that to mean i would be better off with a taxi? I love being near the ocean so i think most of my time would be walking the malecon (correct?). I most definetly would want to spend an entire day in zona colonial doing the turista thing while getting an education at the same time. But by night i like to play.

they have one in ciudad nueva close to coloniazone calle estrelleta esquina canela the pay like 35 dollar per day thy also have a taxy driver tha speck english

You can just go to Boca Chica and get a hotel when you get there.
Lots of "Guest Friendly" small hotels near tye beach. They all have sign out front with their rates.
Usually around $30 to $40 a night. Cheaper by the week, or month.
Why are you flying into Punta Cana, and not Santo Domingo?
Punta Cana is about 2 to 3 hours from SD.
Depending on what you are riding.
Just go to Boca Chica and you will be fine.
Great sea food, and a TON of Italian restaurants on, or near the beach.
Trust no one!
They do like to "Devour Tourists" in Beach Towns.

Does anyone know which hotels is Santo Domingo are guest friendly?
There are only a few guest friendly hotels in Santo Domingo. Most of them you have to pay for a guest or they won't even allow you to have a guest unless is reguistered. I can give you two of them in which I stay all the time because they are cheap and guest friendly. Hotel Napolitano in the Malecon area is about $70 to $80US a day with breakfast included and is guest friendly. Also, the Marriott Hotel is guest friendly and on a cheap day will cost you around $79/day but then after two or three days the rate changes to a higher price. The Marriott Hotel is located at Maximo Gomez street. Try them because they are comfortable.

bigbird started this thread in 2006. He has been traveling to the DR since then. I do hope that he has found the guest friendly hotels by now. ;)

In other words if I book a room with double occupancy and check in with a local who brings her passport they will tell me to take a hike?

The Mariott Jaraguas Renaissance on the Malecon is guest friendly. Get a room in the garden section and park in the back lot. You can enter and exit that way. If you are discreet no one should bother you.

I was in Santo Domingo on 11-09-12
Because of this site I stayed in the Hotel Napolitano

I thought the Hotel was good. The rooms were nice and large, they were clean, the staff was friendly
Although English was at a premium. The pool was good, the pool bar was acceptable, they had a band there in the evening

The hotel was very guest friendly with no extra charge. In fact I was having an issue with the touts outside my first evening (God yes there are a ton of them) and went back in to the Casino to ask if there was anyone that spoke English to help me find a local bar or club. The pit boss hooked me up with a guy in the casino who took me in the "Hotel Taxi" around to different clubs and bars. Worked perfect. I gave him a tip at the end and he seemed genuinely surprised.

Casino was good with TONS of staff. The only issue at all is they are re-doing the lobby
The lobby is an unGodly mess. But when it is done they will have a lobby bar
I fully expect this to be a VERY good thing

I'm going back down Thursday 11-22. I will be staying at the same hotel
By the way, the price was $83 a night plus tax ($110 total) for the most expensive room in the place - 2 Queen beds

All the hotels on Calle Danae are guest/visitor friendly.
