Well yesterday, Friday was the worst manifs we have
had, and if you were stupid enough to leave your
car around the CEP offices,or on the route of the manifs,
then you would have the windows all broken.
One man fired a gun at a demonstrator (who knows why!)
and for that the mob took over and practically beat him to
death, with rocks etc. The Metropole journo said he thought
he must be dead because he was so badly beaten, but in
the end he was still alive. The tempers were the worst I've
heard in Haiti!
It was a bunch of thugs doing as much damage as they could.
And the journo said that there were NO police in that particular area
of PVille to be seen!! Incroyable!!
We were having our AGM of our English library, and my driver
came to pick me up at 4pm to go, and although the route of the
demonstrators was supposed to go down Juvenat to Canape Vert,
they came via Bourdon instead.
So my driver suggested waiting for 30 minutes and then leaving, which
we did, and got there safely. But all along the way was evidence of
rocks and stones thrown, tyres burned etc. It was a very nasty
demonstration.
Frankly I would hold the leaders of the political parties responsible,
cos it's them who are paying for and sending out unemployed
youths to cause all of this. I would fine them, or send them to prison.
Everyone here seems to accept these things are going to happen, and
although they arrest those they can catch, it should be the people behind
it who are held responsible. People who are supposedly upright citizens,
but who do not go out and do the dirty work themselves.
What can you expect of young people who have no work, no money - "give
me some money and I'll do what you want me to do". As they say idle hands
make mischief.
Once again the country is destabilised - the economy will drop, and people
will stop coming in. Thankfully, touch wood, I've not had any tourists
cancel yet, but as you can see from Tom Luce's posting. people are already
asking
if it's safe!! Kesner Pharel spoke out against the violence and political
disruption this morning on his program.
Who knows what is going to happen now.
Fortunately when there are demonstrations, they have to tell their route
to the police, and we get the information on where they're starting from -
usually St Jean de Bosco at 9am, then Delmas 2, and then up Delmas, and
finally coming down to Champ de Mars, and we've still been able to do our
tours, as by the time they get down to Champ de Mars our group has already
gone. Plus I have the phone no. of the Commissioner of Polistour (tourist
police)
on my speed dial, so I can call and ask for polistour support!!
But it is not good for the country - we've had 4 or more years of relative
peacefullness and increased economy - with a large part due to tourism,
thanks to both the President, and especially the Tourism Minister, Stephanie
Villedrouin, and this should be able to develop and help the country.
But someone out there wants to disrupt the country for their own ends!!
All I can say is they do NOT love their country!!
