Bro, you're being way too harsh. If Haitians emigrate to the DR they learn Spanish, as do I as an Americano. Likewise if they emigrate to other Spanish speaking countries. Brazil - Portuguese, USA - English, France - French. To denigrate their language is uncool. I am not a very formal person and I got along fine without a bunch of English formalities in my 35+ years of working. Please lighten up.

And I agree that speaking ONLY Kreyole will keep any Haitian poor and down and out.
It was only under Aristide that Kreyole was recognized as a national language.
There is an ongoing debate over teaching the children in Kreyole vs French... but .. of course.. in Haiti there is very little public education at all.
I have argued at length with my Haitian colleagues - who all speak French or Spanish or English - about the ABSOLUTE need for them to educate the children in French --(although many Haitians will argue that English would be the most important second language for them) but an education in French remains only accessible to the wealthy. But French has a 500+ year legacy in Haiti so while it may not be particularly useful economically - it is certainly useful in order to be able to speak a GLOBAL language. --In order to not be at the mercy of interpreters.. in order to read literature.... all thatAnnie, unless they have a legit shot at emigrating to France, French is a waste. You have probably observed that educated Haitians are adept at learning other languages - perhaps from some basic early bilingual training.
