One of my Haitian friends said: "Compared to Duvalier, Trujillo was a saint." But it was Balaguer who really saved the environment of the Dominican Republic.

Not only did he put more land under national protection but - more importantly - he introduced propane stoves and subsidized propane which essentially eliminated the need for cutting down trees for charcoal.

Sir: . You may consider Haitian Kreyole to be "gibberish" (unintelligible or meaningless speech or writing; nonsense.
"he talks gibberish")

It is spoken by more than 10 million people.

All the public announcements by the governments here in South Florida are printed in English, Spanish & Haitian Kreyole.

..."The language emerged from contact between French settlers and enslaved Africans during the Atlantic slave trade in the French colony of Saint-Domingue(now Haiti) in the 17th and 18th centuries.[10][11] Although its vocabulary largely derives from 18th-century French, its grammar is that of a West African Volta-Congo language branch, particularly the Fongbe language and Igbo language.[11] It also has influences from Spanish, English, Portuguese, Taino, and other West African languages.[12] It is not mutually intelligible with standard French, and has its own distinctive grammar. Haitians are the largest community in the world speaking a modern creole language....

[13]"...Haitian Creole is also spoken in other regions around the world including other islands in the Caribbean, French Guiana, France, the Francophone region of Africa, Francophone Canada, and the Dominican Republic.[16][page needed]

It is usage is governed by an Academy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akademi_Kreyòl_Ayisyen
"The Akademi Kreyòl Ayisyen (Haitian Creole pronunciation: [akademi kɣejɔl ajisjɛ̃]), known in French as the Académie du Créole Haïtien and in English as the Haitian Creole Academy, is the language regulator of Haitian Creole.[4]It is composed of up to 55 scholars under the leadership of Pierre-André Pierre.[5][6]"

YOU may not be able to speak it or understand it. You could learn it, if you wished (which, I am sure, you do NOT wish to do.

No educated person speaks slang and that is what the Haitians speak. You mind find it cute, quaint and culturally entertaining but the fact of the matter is that it's a major obstacle for them in business and development. Think of it as "yea I here for dat der job"

Bro, you're being way too harsh. If Haitians emigrate to the DR they learn Spanish, as do I as an Americano. Likewise if they emigrate to other Spanish speaking countries. Brazil - Portuguese, USA - English, France - French. To denigrate their language is uncool. I am not a very formal person and I got along fine without a bunch of English formalities in my 35+ years of working. Please lighten up.

Again- it is NOT "slang"
And I agree that speaking ONLY Kreyole will keep any Haitian poor and down and out.
It was only under Aristide that Kreyole was recognized as a national language.
There is an ongoing debate over teaching the children in Kreyole vs French... but .. of course.. in Haiti there is very little public education at all.

I have argued at length with my Haitian colleagues - who all speak French or Spanish or English - about the ABSOLUTE need for them to educate the children in French --(although many Haitians will argue that English would be the most important second language for them) but an education in French remains only accessible to the wealthy. Fewer than 10,000 students pass the BAC last year - https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-...-by-departments-and-by-student-2020-2021.html.

It is a DREAM of some Haitians to have ALL the children educated in both languages

https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/op...heid-violates-children-s-rights-and-hampers-/

Of course, it is a DREAM of all of us who love Haiti to have all the children EDUCATED!

Annie, unless they have a legit shot at emigrating to France, French is a waste. They are so much better off learning Spanish or English. To that tiny list, I would also add Python and SQL. :)

Well - certainly ENGLISH is a great benefit. But French has a 500+ year legacy in Haiti so while it may not be particularly useful economically - it is certainly useful in order to be able to speak a GLOBAL language. --In order to not be at the mercy of interpreters.. in order to read literature.... all that
You have probably observed that educated Haitians are adept at learning other languages - perhaps from some basic early bilingual training.

No thanks ! Just speaking facts. They are in fact not quick to assimilate. That is one of the reasons they are 50 years behind the rest of the world. Was not disparaging, just having a frank discourse.

This is correct. Hardly any assimilation. Like Flushing, Queens and the Koreans.
