I like lagers. I really do. I miss the availability of a good Ale to balance the equation though.

There is a new beer called "Social" that is entering the market. I was told it is from Guatamala and I tried a bottle and it was good basic beer. It is being sold about 20 to 30 pesos less per bottle than the other established brands sold here currently.

Prestige is a decent beer.

Last Christmas we had the pleasure of dining with the Dutch GM who manages Prestige operations in P-a-P for Heineken. She said it had been an interesting ride to install Dutch methods onto Haitian culture.

Heineken acquired 95% of Prestige 3 years ago...

Have had the pleasure of drinking a few Prestige beers on a couple of trips to Cape Haitian . This is good stuff. Would definitely buy while spending time in the DR. Wish they would export to the US too.

Prestige: poor to awful beer

Prestige | Brasserie Nationale d'Haiti | Port-au-Prince, Haiti | BeerAdvocate

One review:

1.36/5 rDev -47.9%
look: 1.5 | smell: 1.25 | taste: 1.25 | feel: 1.75 | overall: 1.5

12oz snubby nose bottle served in a pint glass

A - Pours clear and very light straw color. Small white head is gone in an instant.

S - Corn husk, cooked vegetables, herbal notes.

T - Chalky aspirin bitterness right upfront, sweet husky corn flavor, herbal minty flavor, the chalkiness tramples over the light sweet malt.

M - Medium carbonation, light body

Geez!!! Stay away from this unless you just wanna tick it. This one was hard to finish. If I lived in Haiti I wouldn't drink beer.

Just what we need, another beer as good as Brahma.

hey, windy, this is what these same guys had to say about Presidente;

Was recently in the Dominican Republic on vacation...our resort had this beer on tap. ONLY this beer on tap. ONLY this beer in bottles. Needless to say for one week I became a lover of vodka. This was not a good beer. Tasted watered down, was always served slightly chilled and a flavor relative to any US mass produced beer. I can't say enough good things about the people and their island except that if this is their national beer a revolution might not be a bad thing!

True. Bohemia is rated higher than Presidente, but Presidente is not rated as badly as the horrible beer you confirmed Prestige to be from "their part?" of this island?

Mr. AE loves his Presidente beer, but when we spent a vacation at Lifestyles awhile ago he had the same reaction to the beer there. Said it didn't taste like Presidente, was watery, wasn't cold enough, etc. Each day housekeeping left 2 bottles in the room, those were okay. After trying it on tap a couple of times, he switched to rum for the rest of our stay.

I had the same issue with Presidente that was served in the Bavaro area at a resort. Watered down and that was before they introduced the Light version.

Is it safe to buy any beverages bottled in Haiti? Are poo, urine and cholera on the list of ingredients?

The question is not about the taste, it's about safety.

do you believe that every single person in Haiti is like the day laborers and fruit vendors you see in the DR? there are some seriously rich, cosmopolitan people in Haiti, who pop over to Paris for day trips to buy a gown. when they hold car races in the DR, do you think the Haitians bring donkeys? nope. the bike guys bring the latest Ducatis, and the car guys bring their trailers full of race cars. you have an apparently limited understanding of the country and its people.

The question was about safety of bottled beverages from Haiti. I don't think that regular workers at the brewery and bottling plant are rich people who work there between their trips to Paris.
