Hi, does anyone have any info on a bad accident in puerta plata last night with 4 teenagers from rochester ny? My neice is down there with her friend family and about ten other kids. She called me today and said that 4 of her friends were in a bad accident last night after a night out on the town. She told me one was very bad and is in serious condition. If any one knows any more please fill me in.

thanks rsg

rsg, I posted on the other thread but here is newspaper report and pics again.

Puerto Plata Digital

Pagina nueva 2

Paper says 3 people & gives the names (probably misspelled). Says they're in a Clinic in Puerto Plata - most likely Centro Medico, but I'm sure your neice knows. According to the report they were driving too fast & lost it on a bend in the road. Probably not used to unlit roads here?

Seems the air bags did not open or never have been replaced after a previous accident ???

Doesn't look like a hard frontal impact, bags are not designed to deploy from roof crushing, side impact etc. I'm only going by what I see/read, but doesn't look like it hit hard enough in forward cabin to deploy bags.

Damage to front appears top be from pole rolling down?

not a hard frontal impact? The entire front of the car is destroyed...looks like they went head-on into the pole at a very high speed...

Make sure that your niece notifies the American Embassy. If the kids are badly hurt, they should perhaps be transferred to another hospital in the Capital? I trust that they took out traveller's medical insurance. (but, of course, we are all immortal until 35!) - PM me if I can help.

Sacarasm David, Sarcasm

Hard to see in photos but bags could have been already cut out, fortunately I was not on scene

Have you ever been in an accident involving the deployment of the bags? I did and my opinion is that the bags did not deploy, they have not been cut out. Look at the picture.

It cost $$$$$$$$$ to replace bags. As I said before it seems to me or it could be that the bags have not been replaced after a previous accident.

Air bags

I'm not an auto engineer but from what I've seen and heard
1 air bags don't work if seat belts not in use
2 must be direct head on hit to activate sensors in bumpers
(from the looks of the accident pictures they might of missed th sensors)
3 if the air bags deploy thered be a large hole in the center of the steering wheel where the driver's air bag is.
Hope this helps and I hope everyone involved comes out alright
If they rented on a Visa crd they might have some medical insurance there
Best of luck

Airbags DO work without the seatbelts fastened in all American and most European imports. Most have the sensors in the corners of the bumper, however not all imploy on impact as they should.
Also at the price, 4 digits, some are not replaced after a previous or minor accident for obvious reasons, someone is pocketing the $$....
I had a minor accident once, the deployed airbags cost more to replace than the actual body damage was to fix. Difference is in the states the computer checks for their presence at inspection time, something alot of countrys don't require.

Calm down you Reconstruction Specialists

Yes unfortunately, damm things hurt and confuse you with dust filling vehicle. The corn starch or talc or whatever that particular model uses should be evident if it did deploy

The air bag does not deploy from an "impact sensor" but from a deceleration sensor and I have no idea what it is, but willing to bet trapping on a carrier would deploy the bags. (That has as much to do with the direction of this thread as anything)

I do recall a friend of mine had the air bags deploy in an older Pontiac Fiero from driving too fast across a rough parking lot! They act not only on deceleration but gravitational forces as well.

I have no idea if the bags deployed, did not deploy, why they did or did not, am not an Auto engineer or reconstruction specialist, simply said in jest "the impact didn't look that severe" and apparently many people read only part of a post before they form their own conclusion and offer expert opinion

IF you can't understand my comment about not being a "severe" front end collision was sarcasm, how can I expect you to understand anything I say? I would say a blind fool might look at that picture and conclude "Yep, that looks like a crash where air bag should have deployed"

Tow that van to your personal impound, assess all the sensors (Don't forget to download the EE DR) and then go sit on the beach and have a beer.

Relax people, relax
