Health insurance cost and coverage

I've been doing some research on local health insurance in DR. From what I've found, it seems that Humano is one of the best. Does anyone know the approximate cost to get coverage? Also, I live in Pedernales where there are no private clinics. If I need surgery (hysterectomy more precisely), can I decide what clinic and city I want to use or do I have to use the closest to me or can I pick a clinic anywhere in the country that best suits my needs?

Coverage should be 2,000 pesos or less per month. Covers 80%, no drug coverage. You can go to any private clinic in the DR that accepts your company.

Would 2000 pesos cover an operation like a hysterectomy?
I know there are insurance policies for $100 a month....I think you should call a couple of companies

Gotta keep in mind the grace period (or whatever they call it) before you are covered and your age also factors into the equation.

There are several levels of coverage depending on how you get the policy. If under your job, it’s most likely a no frills basic one. There are several packages that increase the premium, but still are far cheaper than not having any coverage at all, unless you go to a public hospital and get lucky.

You select the service provider from the long list they have or you can ask directly your provider if they accept your policy’s company.

You can select from all over the country, as there’s no limitation on service area.

Reminds me of this show I saw many months ago. It deals with purchasing health insurance in the DR, but it is in Spanish. The guy is in the industry. Hmm, he has an accent. Could be an expat. lol

My wife and I have Palic Prestige( Mapfre) and it covers 100 percent on most tests, exams, and 80% on operations....etc. We pay 9300 pesos per month for the pair of us at age 61 and 64. Remember that they will not cover pre-existing conditions but most operations are much cheaper than the USA. You will need to see a specialist for your particular issue and the closest decent private clinic would be in Barahona. I would go to the capital myself if I was in your situation, To Clinica Abreu or equivalent.

If PM me I will send you a cost / benifit comparison of all our Humano Plans and Mapfre ( Palic) health insurers.

2000-2300 pesos is a good figure ro go by .

THe main thing most expats want is to know that they are covered in case of an emergency. Most dominicans don't think about emergencies as much as the cost of doctors consultants and tests.

There are things I have learned over the past years and especially as a result of my being in the hospital in intensive care last year.

If you don't have a good plan you need to pay cash upfront ( maybe 300,000 pesos at 12 midnight , or pay by credit card.
I personally am very reluctant to give anyone here access to my credit card. Possibly they can charge anything they want and you have little or no recourse.
At least when there is an insurer involve there is a check on the billing.
I ( my insurer) was charged 700 dollars for three IV food drips.

If there is a pre-existing condition that for example requires a hysterectomy or any elective surgery no insurer will pay it. They will pay for some non-emergency surgeries after 6 months.

I hope this is helpful.

My family has used ARS Humano Plan Royal for the past several years. It has worked OK.

Generally the answer is no with respect to buying a policy but you then have to read that policy very carefully looking for anything pertaining to claims submitted by people who are in the country illegally - Those past 120 days and no Cedula. Most policies have limited coverage for the first six months to a year anyways.

Just wondering if the basic government health insurance (Senasa ) , which Abinader is
promoting, universal coverage for all without health insurance, is available to residents.
Or only citizens. I can not get private insurance anywhere in the country because I am +65.
Only option is to be employed by a DR company, which is not an option for me.
Senasa is very basic, pero mejor que nada. Don’t know the age of the poster.

I'm 32, relatively healthy, I have ARS universal one of their top plans. It covers 90% of weird stuff, 100% of ER and tests, 85% of prescriptions up until 35,000 pesos per year or about 425usd. Also it covers hospital room, private up to 5000 per day. I pay about 8000 pesos every 3 months or 136usd or about 46 bucks a month. I have a good one because I do a lot of Adventure enduro riding. Last time I went to the hospital/er for 3 days I never even saw the bill. Just signed, BUT now a lot of places are not accepting new clients or client increases in plan due to covid. I have been wanting to increase something and they won't let me now for 8 months.... uff.

When I go to pick up my card, I will try to ask about if legal residents can have coverage under Senasa.
Perhaps someone will also know. I was always under the impression that the main difference between legal residents and citizens was the ability to vote in elections, but Senasa could be another difference.

Thanks for all the very important info.... I stay in the country for several months at a time and have been considering getting a plan to to have in case of an emergency... I've heard the nightmares of people walking into an ER with no insurance and how they had to get over 200k in the middle of the night before they even look at you while you are IN PAIN....

Yes, but isn’t that for private hospitals?
