I recommend the Hotel Aloha Sol on the Calle Del Sol.
If they do not have a room for you they'll send you to another
place. It runs $50 USD/nite weekdays, $60 USD/nite weekends.
Cabbies will know how to get there, it is a well known hotel.

You don't need to make a reservation, just arrive... This is
what I've always done.

Hotel Colonial is very inexpensive as well as hotel Monteray.

Ask for Lazaro at Colonial

And Jr. at Monteray both speak english adn are the owners. It is on 39 de marzo and salvador cucurillo.

That should be 30 de marzo..and

there are lots of places available> camp David Ranch up on the Mountain is only $us40 a night with the most fantastic views around. Cabbies know them all.

While doing my own search for accomodations I came across the website 'Island Connoisseur' that listed the following: (Listings starting with B are the more expenseive, F the least expensive)

(B) Camino Real, Tel. 5817000, Del Sol y Mella. Good restaurant and nightclub, no parking facilities. C Matum Hotel & Casino, Av Monumental, Tel. 581-3107/8682, Fax 4768415. 47 rooms (old, poor a/c), nightclub, swimming pool open to non-residents US$2.

(C-D) Don Diego, Av Estrella Sadhal?, on road north, Tel. 5754186. Restaurant and nightclub.

(C-E) Ambar, also on Av Estrella Sadhal?, Tel. 5751957.

(D) Mercedes, Calle 30 de Marzo 18, Tel. 5831171. Hot water, a/c or fan, phone, central so a bit noisy, tatty, but friendly, fast laundry (5 hours).

(F) Dorado, Av Salvador Cucurullo (F) Colonial, Salvador Cucurullo, near 30 de Marzo, close to guaguas. Small clean rooms with a/c, TV, central, small cheap restaurant, friendly, luggage store. Many other cheap hotels on Salvador Cucurullo, 4 blocks north of Parque Duarte on 30 de Marzo (many guaguas start from this junction).
