Pledges - $370.00 which will buy a basic food fox for 9.25 families
Paid - $120.00, which will buy a basic food box for 4 families

So, $120.00 will buy a full $120.00 worth of food.
QUOTE]

QUE????? Looks to me like US $120 is buying US $160 worth of food if all four families get the food boxes ;) ;) :cheeky:

Don't you mean US $120 buys THREE boxes M'Dear?? :ermm: Or have YOU also negotiated one extra box for each three ordered??

Keep up the good work regardless of your maths!! :pirate:;):cheeky: ~ Grahame.

Pledges and Paypal - A few highlights ..

We need someone to collect 100 dollars from Sosua and take it to Santiago. Please pm me if you can do this!

A poster has just pledged $370 with the following comment: "I am here in Santiago and see the devastation it has caused thus far."

A well known 'grinch' and a person that I really like has just written that this has awakened the spirit of Christmas and the spirit of 'giving' in him! You're such a sweety! Thanks for the 'food box' suggestions!

Dafishguy, a fairly new poster to DR1, said I could mention his name - Thanks Dafishguy!

Could I just make a comment… I can understand the Christmas spirit but I think other products are much needed.

Mixed nuts ($150)? for a lot cheaper you could buy powder milk, maicena, canned goods, etc; things that are easy to cook and can feed a family.

Big Ponch (140 pesos)? Again, for this amount of money you could buy water, or bleach…etc..
Chicken? If they lost their houses, how will they cook it.

When we went to San Cristobal after Noel, those products where most needed: Bottled water, canned goods, bleach, medicine (for fever, headaches, and parasites), milk, pampers, etc.

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks Juanita and of course you are right. We need to refine the food box today before we go buying. I just took the basic Christmas basket to get this started. If you would like to, I would appreciate if, with your recent experience, you would put a 40 dollar food box together for me and pm me with it.

I didn't want to disrespect chris, my favorite lady of Dr1 but I have to take juanita's side.
I have been to places where people have lost homes and all their belongings. believe me, they are left with nothing, so the last thing they have on their minds is a coke bottle and mixed nuts. The list looks like as we are preparing for a picnic is a park.
I would rather prefer juanita's suggestion and make changes to the list.
Ponche?? Isn't this some sort of cream alcoholic beverage?
Might as well throw in a 6 pack or beers if we are going to give away nuts and crackers.

I am giving away cash to a family so they can buy what they need. I am also in financial deficit as the constant rain for so many days has ruined my business.

No need for recognition

It's the least my wife and I can do to help out.

We always give at this time of year. We just want to help make a small difference in someones life.

We don't need recognition. The feeling we get in our soul is more than enough reward for helping out.

If you are able to do the same. You will always remember that special feeling you get.

Take care. 8 more days and we will be in Sosua. YES!!!

Rick

P.S. Of course we'll adopt you Miguel. We like to help out the less fortunate :)

hehe, just joking Amigo.

Chris - it should be noted that the paypal email notice is not from "Body Care Products" but from a persons name @ gmail.

I thought I should post this so people do not delete it thinking they are only getting an email from "Body...."

Right?

Thanks Marlie, that is my husband's e-mail. Of course I never send paypal requests to myself, so I have no idea what it looks like. I get a copy sent to me, so I can keep up with what is happening. I don't want to publish the email here so that spammers can harvest it but when Richard gets home from his business trip, he is going to kill me for sure ;) )

Dear Hillbilly, you have a very special place in this effort. ;) Your job is to go and get a discount out of somebody! I know from experience you do this best.:laugh: Supermercado is your choice. Where can we do best?

Now I have to go and figure how well Chip is to do his part as I have money to wire for the first purchases.

If Chip is still under the weather, can the Hillbilly clan help with purchasing and distribution? I know he will jump in as soon as he can and I also know that you guys are very busy this time of year.

I don't know exactly how you guys are gonna do this, (haven't had the time to read all the posts) distribute the donations but what if you give the families some sort of voucher and set this up with a couple of supermarkets where the families can go and purchase what they need??? this way you can also keep track of how many families bought the goods.

I have to add a couple of things...

First - the transaction took less than a minute to complete - so no excuses that you don't have the time right now - it is as simple as 1-2-3.

Secondly - we all know that this time of year is for a lot of people financially draining - but here is a suggestion that might make it easier on you when you are trying to decide if you can afford to donate or not.

What a wonderful gift to give to someone as a present (especially those who are hard to buy for) - "I donated food and supplies IN YOUR NAME to the unfortunate people in Santiago, DR who have lost pretty much everything in their lives".

Give it some thought! Like Chris said - time is of the essence, this needs to be done NOW!
