South is more tropical than north (although north is tropical also- this is a tropical island) as it is on the Carribbean Sea rather than the Atlantic Ocean so it is warmer.
Also less rainfall than on the north....

Is there a difference between hot and hot? The only place I've ever been cold on this island has been in Constanza and Jarabacoa. Other than that, the whole island is pretty warm and tropical all year long!

As for beaches and nightlife, Punta Cana has great tropical beaches, so so nightlife.

Hi Boogieman, a suggestion would be that you think over what "tropical" is for you. Is it for living in? Visiting? Is it the athmosphere or just the climat or the vegetation? Tropical towns or tropical flowers?
The whole DR is tropical, but it has its variations and changes in everything from town structure, flora & fauna as well as type of beaches...

-42 C or F might be a little cold for anyone and it would be solid as a rock.

well.. im lookin for a place to live.. i speak little spanish but enough to get me by.

lookin for a tranquil quiet place to live.. .while still being able to enjoy good restaurants and a decent nightlife.

i was told punta cana is decent for that.. second puerto plata.

then somebody else recommended sosua, but also added property there is slightly expensive nowadays.

so im still confused.

You need to come and visit all the places, as those you mention are very different from each other.
Punta Cana is on the south coast, Puerto Plata and Sosua is on the north coast.
Even though Puerto Plata and Sosua are just a 30 min drive apart, they are very different.
I live in Puerto Plata which is more a local society, a Caribbean town.
Sosua is a society too, but more villas, and more expat concentrated.
Other areas, such as Santo Domingo and Santiago are big towns with different content and lives... and so on..

Come and visit and make an opinion of your own!

Edited to include:
Your choice will also depend on how you want to live, your budget and if you want to buy or rent a place.
Outside Puerto Plata, on the other direction ( not towards Sosua ) you have small communities as well, Cofresi and Costambar, that are more expats in if you are looking for that.
