Its not just an uptick for the S&P 500 but rather a rip your face off rally that has left the people expecting a recession in 2023 and staying on the sidelines holding the proverbial bag......although money market accounts/CD's have provided a little cushion.

That having been said, you are correct that the stock market and the economy are not the same thing. Lots of countries still struggling under massive debt and likely unable to right the ship without a bailout..............Argentina in LA quickly comes to mind as the poster child for bad economic policies/decisions.

I would like to see how the overall Dominican stock market has done..............but since it is hardly transparent........getting data is difficult.

Think money laundering due to the DR being a major illegal drug transhipment point and it may start to make sense.
A very profitable business it is.
highly unlikely, more like big buz, banking, Agra, mining and manufacturing.

JD, that can't be across the board in SC. You have to have gotten a sweetheart deal somehow, true?
Of course not. I found a good deal.
I just happened to find a small residential building where most of the tenants either don't have cars, or they don't like to park on the side of the building.
It has quite a bit of free space in front so they usually park there.

I have been in Colombia for a month now and the prices here are ridiculously cheap (for a foreigner), the locals are getting hit but due to the exchange rate us gringos are loving it. I just furnished a three bedroom apartment and furniture and appliance prices are literally half of what they are in the DR. I filled a shopping cart to the very top full of groceries for the equivilent of $60 US dollars. A twenty minute taxi ride is 3-4 dollars, try doing that in Sosua. The taxi from the airport of all places to my hotel which was not a short ride was $4.usd.A taxi ride across the street from POP airport would cost you $20.,lol. Oh,and more importantly,in most areas here there is ZERO roadside trash, zero. I wish I had the patience to post photos and videos to show how quiet and clean it is here..and you can drink the water out of the tap no problem.
The big draw for me is the ease of staying there. Expats, tourists get a six month visa every time they arrive in Colombia. The government has tightened the regulations a bit but a six month stay is still possible. The DR government should see the handwriting on the wall and follow Colombia’s immigration rules. Sooner rather than later.

I couldn't agree more that the same thing should be done in the DR with regards to a 6 months visitor visa.
Violate that and you don't come back without significant delays and/or penalties. No "exit fines" for overstays.

But then, everyone here already knows that.

It is no wonder Colombia is getting the attention.

I disagree completely. Let's compare the two. Colombia you stay more than six months you CANNOT come back. Dominican Republic you can stay SIX YEARS, pay a fee and are welcomed back. You tell me which is more lenient with tourists visiting?

Have a Canadian RCMP friend who was seconded to the Colombian Border Patrol as part of a Canada- Colombia drug trafficking intervention program. Fell in love with the place. Retired and married a Colombian lady, a radiologist, and retired there. Lives in Medellin , has lots of Canadian, US, and UK expat friends. Lives on the city outskirts in a mountainous area. Likes the warm days, cool nights climate.

It’s not paradise. A lot of civil unrest there last year due to the increased cost of living and expats and tourists still have to be aware of robberies and assaults. The mass exodus of Venezuelans didn’t help. Still cheaper and safer than the DR. That being said, I have more affinity for the DR than Colombia. Better the devil you know, I guess.

I personally agree with the Colombian approach. Stay more than 6 months as a tourist and you cannot come back.
That is the very reason why I prefer it!

Become a legal resident if you want to stay longer.

I know, it is just me.

Partially true. You get a three month visa when you arrive. It can be easily extended another three months. After that you leave and are eligible to return six months later. A sweet deal for the average expat or tourist who wants to avoid a North American winter. A lot less expensive than a six year overstay fee in the DR.

I prefer to think the construction of empty apartments is from drug money laundering.
But that is just me.
The units in large condo buildings are immediately sold and occupied. I know you think every person with means has attained it through illegal vice (drugs). The fact of the matter is there is a huge economy here and people are making money. Believe it or not, the D.R is not just Cabarete and Janets super Market.

No I don't think everyone here makes money from illegal drugs. Just a lot of people.

Other than that I am glad the towers are fully occupied.
