Great idea....

I really think this is a huge service to everyone. Even oldtimers like Rocky can learn new tricks....LOL

May I suggest Chris that we change: Visiting the DR as a non-AI Tourist to something more likely to encourage individuals to get the heck out of the AI.

I want to encourage everyone to get out of the hotels, they are given a great deal of misinformation before coming here and after arriving and that needs to be cleared up! Let me put something together for a list to contribute as well.

HOw about - Getting out and about safely in the DR. or Yes it is safe to leave the hotel. Just thoughts.

I will also submit some ideas on how to get out and enjoy the nightlife safely.
I'm confused...
What is AI exactly? Or a non AI tourist ???

I suspect because the new tips are the same as the old tips.

Yes ...and the 440 or so posts. can be summarized as....

1. Be careful out there ...same as anywhere

2. “ Just because you won't eat a lion, doesn't mean a lion won't eat you.”

I enjoyed reading some of the comments
on the first page of this thread from back in 2006.
It got me thinking...
I really need to find some new hobbies.

If getting a firearm leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth, consider getting a stun gun. Hardly anyone in the DR has one, yet it can disable a criminal with only 1 or 2 seconds by applying the stun gun to one of his legs or buttocks or arms. I bought a stun gun in Amazon and arrived a few days ago. This is what it says it can do to criminals.

Apparently, you can seriously injure (well, some criminals could use some injury, you didn't heard that from me) or kill someone if the stun gun touches for more than a couple of seconds or touches "vital parts" of the body (head, neck, chest/stomach area, genitals -now can we say ouch-).

As with a gun, I think someone that is able to remain calm in alarming situations is more capable of using a stun gun than someone that becomes very nervous and clumsy. The latter folks could have the stun gun taken from them by the criminal(s) and worse yet, used on them and that is not the plan. I say everyone either as a driver or passenger finds themselves in "near miss" situations where an accident was barely avoided. If in those occasions you get very nervous, can't think right, etc; a stun gun could be useless. You are better without one. On the other hand, if in those occasions you remain calm and perfectly able to handle anything, maybe a stun gun is right for you.

Also, if you are the jealous type, not a good idea to have a stun gun. Its not meant to be used on your partner. If you find him (or her) cheating, just don't. You might get the urge to get the stun gun and zap his thing, not a good idea. Plus, that might be worse than getting kicked.

Anyway, it says the electric charge it gives is very powerful. Um, I'll take their words for it. No need to see if it's true. lol

The biggest tool here to keep you out of trouble is not a gun or fancy security alarms it's your mouth and who you hang out with, A lot of extranjeros have a really hard time accepting this part - do not hang around poor people here I have lived in the barrio, speak Spanish fully integrated into the culture I can tell you a million examples of robberies I have seen, b-day presents, pasola that a cousins friend had who came to pick up only on thursdays, Dominican mentality works like this; I am nice to gringo I get to go out with him for free food, free rides and maybe I can grease him up for a favor. Look, everyone has sick parents here who need medication, and everyone is friendly but it's with a second intention watch them in the street and you will see the real Dominican personality service and that is who is more tigure because if you do not assert yourself like this you will get taken for a ride - everything is a hustle. If you cannot accept this then live in ignorance or paradise? but objectively this is how it works.. with that said you get out of this when you get into higher social classes or working professionals any DR member who was born here, has spent a lot of time here I promise you is somewhat of a classist out of survival. My first point - your mouth will be a determining factor if you get robbed or not. This is not a place to talk about how you got a 4k referral bonus otherwise you will be getting a lot of WhatsApp messages later that night about someone who needs money. This isn't just Dominican I still have my Colombian taxi driver who asks me for money and tells me all the dental work his family needs right after I update my WhatsApp status about going out for fancy food.

Own a couple lert dogs, stay away from the ones always asking for something. They'll start with a couple 100 pesos and push you to see what kind of sucker you are.
Tell them no the first time and you'll be better off.
Neither a lender or a borrower be.
Don't hire help if you can do it yourself unless you or your friends use them and vouch for them. .
I hired a guy from Charamicos for one day to clean some weeds along the road. He did OK, then I paid him well and later that night he hopped my front wall, woke me up knocking at 12:30 AM with alcohol on his breath telling me his wife just had a moto accident and he needed 5000 pesos for a cast for her leg.
I had a big dog who was not happy about being woken up either. I told him to get the flock out and me my machete and my 80 lb dog escorted him out. I told him to never come back to my neighborhood.
He told me his previous restaurant employer, a German, loaned him money before. I told him go see the German I'm not a fool.
