dv8 is not a chica. every chica knows everything about WU.

Doesn't have to be a chica. If you closely related to a third world country, you would have to send money for an emergency, lol. Also living abroad, sometimes, you have to send money home cause you need someone to buy and bring something.

What is needed to receive a remittance.

1.) The number of the transfer, a ten digit code, the MTCN (money transfer code number)
2.) You need a valid ID. Make sure the remitter spells your name as on your ID.
3.) The complete name of the remitter, as same on transfer.
4.) The total amount of cash you are waiting for.
5.) Origin country of the transfer.

Regards,

PJT

PS advice/warning: do not use a cedula or SS number for the transfer.

i have never specified the amount sent. i tell them i have no idea, and i get my money just the same.

if i am buying something from a private seller in the US, i simply pay them by WU. no Paypal, and all that space age horse muffins.

There is a flier available in the Western Union Vimenca locations that informs you how to receive money. The amount of the money you are waiting for is listed as one of the necessities.

It used to be that way, you could send even with no ID, but since some time back (about 2 years or so) you need an ID to send.

Cash transactions do require ID. This is to discourage money laundering. Online credit/ debit card transactions obviously can supply LE with everything they need to know about the sender thanks to their ease of metadata harvesting. I'm surprised that this topic hasn't been thoroughly covered in "Mars/ Venus".

Western Union is very expensive (10%) but like the number of worldwide locations supporting their system the money that you need can be transferred literally in 20 minutes or so. For amounts larger than $250 it makes a lot more sense to do a "same day" bank to bank transfer since the price of this type of transfers is fixed. Both types of transactions take less time to execute than it takes to read this thread. :classic:

Suarezn, if the person sending money have not used Xoom before, the first transaction will take longer (up to 3 days) to confirm identity of the sender and validate his payment information. If the money needs to get there fast, WU or MoneyGram should be the way to go. If not so fast, then Caribe Express. If time is of no factor, then Xoom is fine.

Hmmm OK I don't remember that to be the case with me. I've been sending for years though, but I have credit cards attached that I use. The only thing I remember is they called to verify identity, etc...and after that it was smooth sailing. WU will do the same thing if I remember correctly. Also I'm not sure I understand. Does Caribe Express has a website to send money I don't know about? As far as I know they're just one of the delivery services that Xoom uses in The DR.

this is not the first time i say this: dr1 is a wealth of knowledge. many other users will benefit from this thread.

africaida, at my age i appreciate being called a chica :) ever since i left poland i was pretty much on my own. my parents helped me with 1000 pounds when i moved to UK and never gave me money again. they make enough and manage to save some so there was never any need for me to help them other than get them some goodies whenever i visit. they also have few family members in poland to help them just in case. and i have a family here that will pay what it takes for my ticket to go home at short notice, should something happen. therefore there was never any need for me to use money sending services.

LOL.............
Taca?o may have been right. It would probably have been faster to direct the question to Western Union however; just think of all the color commentary and ancillary informations we would have missed.......
Long live dr1....

Xoom can't be used in Europe. I have an online account at WU, for the case my cards get stolen, so I can send to myself.
For repeated sends thru the online account you must identify yourself once officially to the WU, in my country this is done at the postoffice with pass.

In five years, the thought of not being able to send money by cell phone or online is going to be considered quaint. The only people I see using Western Union in the states look like drug dealers making payments to their suppliers.

Follow Omar's rec. Have her use XOOM with Caribe Express or go to a transfer office that represents CE. CE will deliver to your place or sometimes best just have it sent to CE Dominican Republic and pick it up. We use this to send money inside the DR, offices are everywhere--simple. WU is a huge rip off on both fees and exchange.
If you don't care about the cost to sender and it is a one time deal--then WU is easiest. Have sender do dollars and change it where you like. CE's rate is not too bad.
Either company only requires the exact Name on your Cedula and verbal name of the sender to receive.

Have to agree w/ this one. Xoom is by far the cheapest method of them all. They will call the recipient when the xfer is available, Usually within an hour, and the money can be delivered to the residence, or picked up at one of several vendors, Caribe express, CAM, etc. There's alson an option available to the sender to receive e-mails or texts, which reports the status of the xaction from start to pickup.

Western Union sends me the transaction number; or MTCN; via email and I track it this way if need be.

Maybe they do make recipient fill out something before they release funds. But the times I've sent money, the recipient hasn't mentioned having to do this.
I believe anyone signs a receipt WU or CE. Long ago, my wife at times would call back needing the MT---number. I haven't sent money from US in quite a while but know that these companies are under serious money laundering observation so-----.

Yeah... When I've sent money to DR via WU and Xoom, recipient only needed the transaction number to tell the courier.

I'm not surprised they're under close scrutiny for money laundering. It was very easy for me to setup my accounts; no identity check was needed.

Xoom actually sends the money right away, they don't wait for the transfer to clear at my bank!
