How will you spend Christmas/New Year in the DR

And what will your Christmas dinner consist of.

Christmas in the Dominican Republic is true party time, rivaled only by Easter Week. It is a time when people travel home from wherever, bringing presents from afar. It is a party in every sense of the word. However, the current pandemic situation has changed a lot of that.


Curfews and restrictions on gatherings, even of families in public spaces, have put a damper on much of the joyous stuff people are used to doing: ginger tea for dozens of neighbors, community decorating of entire blocks, the much-anticipated company partying, the gift baskets, the carol-singing known as aguinaldos, and the “secret Santa” at the office or place of employment, all on hold for at least a year. While some of these activities might be doable via Zoom, it is just not the same.


Neither is Christmas the same without midnight mass, because the churches cannot be filled as usual. Christmas season merengues keep Dominicans in Christmas spirit since October. “De la Montaña” and “El Pavo y el Burro” are two favorites.

Will have a large family gathering at the wifes parents home, Dinner will consist of Ham,Pork and Turkey as well as whatever other family members and friends bring by during the evening. From what Im gathering nobody is thinking about curfew or social distancing

Trying to get a sense of the typical DR Christmas/New Years menu.
We spent only one Christmas in the DR but we were with Canadians and Americans. Ham and Turkey with the usual trimmings.At a restaurant to boot

Someone posted a typical Dominican Christmas menu here on DR1..a few years back ...something similar to the list below...

• Puerco asado (Roasted pork)
• Pollo asado o al horno (Roasted chicken or Chicken cooked in the oven)
• Moros de guandules (a combination of rice and 'peas' - usually gungo peas)
• Ensalada Rusa (Russian salad - macedoine of potatoes and carrots, with peas and boiled eg bound with mayonnaise)
• Pasteles en Hojas (Tropical root vegetables cooked in banana or plantain leaves)
• Pan Telera (a very long, soft white bread with a crusty top)
• Dulces (Sweets - such as jellies, marshmallows, caramels)
• Galletitas dulces y biscochos (Biscuits and Cakes - like pastries filled with figs, Danish Butter Biscuits and others)
• Pudim Navideno (Some families might have a version of the European Christmas Pudding)

When we spend Christmas at “Tia’s” ..house we have more or less everything on the list ...same old ...every year ....😩🇩🇴

This year my Brazilian father in law is here ....so we will probably have Dominican food on Christmas Eve ...and his ‘moqueca’ on Christmas Day😋😋😋 .🇧🇷...with the soccer games playing in the background, no doubt.

Adding peas and carrots to potato salad and no mustard is like putting pineapple on Pizza.

Turkey breast with gravy, masked potato, cranberry, buttered carrots, cauliflower with cream sauce, broccoli with cheese sauce, and creamed spinach steak house style. I hope that will keep'em happy!!!

Just an FYi, in BC they locked down all parties and drinking after 8pm Dec 31 , your not alone in the DR . Worldwide.

Near where I live, on New Year’s Eve, six RCMP members will be on site at Big White ski resort to 'provide further assistance'.

Not all events were shut down for New Year's Eve parties. The Dept of Tourism visited (I know of this past Sunday) some venues and discussed the event re number of people, spacing, etc. etc. with management. How all that was arranged, IDK but it happened at a number of places in the southern sector.
