A red alert for deep south

There is a difference in the way the government is responding this time as oppose to what happened last year.

SANTO DOMINGO.- The Center of Emergency Operations (COE) has declared a Red Alert for three provinces of the Deep South: Pedernales, Barahona and Independencia. The alert responds to the existence of a tropical wave in the eastern portion of the island that is moving to the west.

Because of this, the agencies of assistance and rescue have been activated, and a constant watch is being kept on all of the low-laying areas in case evacuations become necessary.

I'm supposed to fly to puerto plata on wednesday morning....what are the odds that I'll make it?

From Tropical Storm Gustav you will have NO problem landing as it should be over Haiti & heading for Cuba by then! HOWEVER ............. keep tuned in here for the next 24 hours if you can as we have a developing system (95L I believe) which is on a much further north track & might give you a bumpy ride on Wednesday!! I would advise that you stay in touch also with your tour company, just in case they decide to cancel or delay the flight. ~ Grahame.

The 2 am advisory is here
Tropical Storm GUSTAV Public Advisory

Still a tropical storm but now at 70 mph max sustained winds so nearly a hurricane. Has slowed forward motion speed from 14 mph to 12 mph & more slowing expected as posted above. Not much change in other aspects. Note coastal storm surge 2-4 ft above normal tide levels near & to east of where centre makes landfall. Rain remains the major problem with this one, not wind.

There is a difference in the way the government is responding this time as oppose to what happened last year.

And they also started slow emptying of dams! Great!

Looking at the satellite loop from the last couple of hours it looks like that storm is heading for southern DR rather than Haiti.

I hope all of this tropical-storm-hurricane weather will stop a little bit in the second half of September... I would surely like to have some sun on my vacation... or is it always like this in DR during this time of year?????????

not always,
just during septembers, ha ha.
no, this is of course no typical every day weather, but it is for a day or 2 when tropical storms or hurricanes like the actual Hurricane Gustav are nearby.
the east coast here in Cabeza de Toro/Punta Cana is completely quiet, we did not get more rain last night and nearby zero winds, Sea is completely quiet, skies over the ocean towards the north are dark clouded, looks like a bit cloudy day, nothing else. yesterday late afternoon some rain started when i was in the middle of Bavaro, but nothing special and it stopped while driving home to Cabeza de Toro.
Gustav is now awaited to get an category 2 upgrade right before it's landfall on the south Haitian Peninsula.
anybody online on the southwest now?
Mike

Yes, with the 8am advisories it looks like Gustav will make landfall in Haiti as a category 2 hurricane with near 90 miles per hour winds. After the Southwest of the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Gustav is expected to be a major hurricane in the Northwestern Caribbean Sea in a few days.

Lots of water up here. The Rio Jimenoa is nearly as high as after Olga.

'morning Chris,
how is the rain on the southwest Chris?
hope all is well.
Gustav may increase again over the waters south of Cuba and that would bring him to category 3 hurricane force.
the same open path Fay turned in to move over cuba and northwards to key west/florida is still open, nearby same sourrounding conditions.
Gustav would have non favorable conditions to the west of Cuba, so a turn to the north should stay in considertaion when he reaches a position over open water sout of the western Cuba.
Punta Cana is still completely calm, no winds, huge humidity since early on, it is cloudy but hot/humid, the neighbour is starting the Marinarium Excursion, a snorkel tour running from the Pier right aside my house, and water conditions are actually perfect for that.
i canceled yesterday all my wter activities for today because i awaited it rainy and also some winds, but nothing yet.

So, it is still coming in and there still is a lot of water to come. Folks now do not need to relax today. Stay home if it is safe there, make a sanchocho but be ready to lend a hand to a neighbor and be aware of the amount of water dropping down.
(these satellite images will refresh as the day goes on)

It's been raining on and off since last night in Santo Domingo. Regarding the person who will be traveling to Samana on the new road, I would caution against that. I recall traffic on the new road had to be interrupted with recent rains, apparently their is a construction flaw that causes flooding at one point.

Steady light rain in Puerto Plata for much of the early morning but no wind. The signs of surface flooding in our garden area (which we get after torrential rain) are not there. I'm due in downtown area this morning so will report on conditions there this afternoon.
