Hurricane San Zenon

Today is the anniversary of one of the deadliest hurricanes to hit DR. Not many alive today who remember it. My mother-in-law (deceased) was 10, and she told me how one of her older brothers went out to buy kerosene when they thought it was over. Sadly, it was the eye and the winds picked up as he returned and a flying sheet of metal roofing sliced his leg open. No meds, hospitals in shambles, he died.

As an aside, this was the same year Trujillo came to power.

One that severe now would suck patio furniture off balconies on 20+ story apartments and it would be a deadly bunch of shrapnel airborne.

Not many people know that Parque Eugenio María de Hostos was built over what was the site for a mass grave for victims of San Zenon in Santo Domingo.

Last week we had a tornado pass through near to the river in Santo Domingo. I had my balcony doors open and suddenly it was like being in the middle of a cloud. The chairs on the balcony were thrown into the room and when I tried to close the doors the force from the wind was unbelievable the glass was bending inwards like a banana. Truly scary moment. It only lasted a couple of minutes but it was a reminder of how strong the wind could be.

I think if we did get hit these days the biggest issue would be electricity and internet as I imagine both would be out for a long period of.time. And so much of everything that everyone does relies on electricity and internet.
