That site that Linda put up is quite informative--maybe too wordy but really good stuff....up there with Mike.

He says that the eyewall is now almost double the size it was before hitting PR, and that the winds stretch out 100 miles (160kms)...seems right in tune with the images...good post Linda...

William, you keep posting...you are there, and probably the closest person we have up there...really fine reporting...Stay calm folks....we will get through this....HB...

It's slowly moving - I've been tracking since 4:30am.... very slow progress to Samana.

Watch the longitude... how long it takes for east to west movement
Painfully slow.

On;y good news is that for every bit east to west we get the bonus of northward movement
and better separation from our problem

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK
------------------------------
At 800 AM AST (1200 UTC), the large eye of Hurricane Maria was
located near latitude 19.9 North, longitude 68.7 West. Maria is
moving toward the northwest near 9 mph (15 km/h), and this general
motion is expected through tonight. A turn toward the
north-northwest is forecast on Friday. On the forecast track, the
eye of Hurricane Maria will continue to pass offshore of the
northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic today. Maria should
then move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern
Bahamas tonight and Friday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher
gusts. Maria is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson
Hurricane Wind Scale. Some strengthening is possible during the
next day or so.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from
the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 150
miles (240 km).

The estimated minimum central pressure is 959 mb (28.32 inches).

REMINDER
========================================================

RSJ is 70.0..... current is east still 68.7 - but sufficiently north at 19.9N... Cabrera is 19.6N

I calculate it at 51 miles from the tip of the Samana peninsula and 90 miles from me in RSJ right now.  Hardly anything happening here now, just some moderate gusts.  I expected worse than this.  Watch it pick up as soon as I post!

I don't think Sosua has experienced tropical storm force sustained winds yet, but there have been some gusty conditions to 45mph.

https://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=IPUERTOP9#history

It has actually been quite normal stuff albeit blowing for a long time. Definitely not moderate or strong tropical storm force sustained winds from my past experiences. Trees blowing around, leaves falling and twigs breaking off trees, maybe some cosmetic building damage which puts it how it feels on Beaufort Scale ( http://www.spc.noaa.gov/faq/tornado/beaufort.html) at strong breeze to strong gale in gusts, with 22mph to 47pmh winds.

current position finally hit 20.0N by my chart.....

still east of the 70.0W mark (RSJ)

Not to you boys in SOS/CAB yet... by a long shot
But I doubt it will actually get any closer as it creeps north and west

Here in Cabrera it is quite breezy with no rain at the moment. It’s been about this level of wind for about an hour now. Expect it is around as bad as it will get here or close to it which is good news! No power since early last night but that’s not completely unusual in Cabrera!!

WW, just looking at the recon data as it flies through the storm now as it approaches offshore at Cabrera.

https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/recon/

Look at the graph to the bottom left of the flight data. Peak 45 knot (51mph) at surface at point the aircraft turned to the north east and that could be gusts. You will be the closest that it gets to the rest of DR.

On that basis I am doubting if Cabarete, Sosua or PP will get sustained tropical storm force winds going forward (currently 21mph). Only gusts.

I hope.

Latest satellite gif shows it taking a westerly path rather than north as projected. Looks like the storm may hug the north coast...

That's my guess too ju10..... once past me & Catseye(RSJ) it will be equidistant or further from SOS/CAB

I can't see that... climbing slowly up past 20N and creeping east towards 70W
Still NW.... and painfully slow

Last night at 5pm it was 18.8N & 67.3W
8am this morning it read 19.9N & 68.7W

That's slow.... 15 hrs to go N one latitude and just over one longitude west.... but almost equal movement in each direction
The prediction was 12 hrs to reach those coordinates.....slow progress

Was just out with a trip down the road to Cabarete and onto a property just beyond Sea Horse Ranch and there was no tree damage evident a very few small twigs on the ground. A breeze but nothing special.

But on the beach it was wild. Got soaked in seconds with salt water spray.

Still quite a distance ju10 but it may not be worse if it doesn't come closer.

The duration will be a killer....PC still in rain..PR too
Southern tail drags a lot of water

On the ground in Sosua.

Still relatively calm here in el batey, Sosua.  Intermittent periods of heavy rain (like right now). And sustained medium winds with frequent high gusts.  Power has been cycling on and off very frequently (damages electronics w/o power strips w circuit breakers), so we have gone to full time generator power for the time beings.

Cable line with local channels still working fine, but the satellite channels (CNN, Weather Channel, etc) go in and out.  From "snowy" to "complete signal loss".
I'm amazed that the internet signal has stayed up? (albeit with having to reboot the routers periodically).
Tap water running ok also.

I can see some of my neighbors porch Venetian style blinds were blown off. I took mine down (again), but she didn't this time ("Irma wasn't too bad, so I don't think I'll need to this time").

I'm itching to get out and take a look around town. But I'll fight that urge because of these wind gusts. If I'm reading things right, even though on the whole we've again been pretty lucky as to Maria's path, its closest / strongest period here is still about 4 hours away.

So I think my walkabout will have to wait until mananna.

Probably a decent idea to wait. Maria really hasn't arrived offshore of Sosua yet. No need getting wet unless the booze has run out. :)

In la Romana, after a night of high winds from almost due west that caused widespread damage ,there are now thunderstorms with some heavy rain ..The worst is expected from now for the next two or three hours ....much much worse than Irma .The wind has turned more to the south and still too strong to venture outside.
