Howdy, I'm from the US living in RD with my novia, I'm very pleased to have found a fountain of wisdom in this site. Thank you all.
Hi there ,
my first time commenting.
I too have fallen in love with a dominican man…I am from canada .….things can be complicated…..it’s a trying time for me……I am thinking about moving there ? maybe short term …to see how things play out ……we have to give it some time with any new relation ship right ?
yes he is working on a resort…..but wants to further himself like anyone , anywhere . I am in agreement.and want to support him , in every way , yes and financially …..to get a degree ….he is a very smart , compassionate man.

Welcome to DR1. I won't try to kid you. You and countless others have come here, fallen in love and have been swindled out of millions. By all means have some fun, screw your brains out but don't marry or fall in love with your favorite prostitute (guy or girl).
Maybe meet his real wife and child before funding his education.
It's a game to these guys and you will lose.

Hey ,
I appreciate your response and I have heard and read this many many many times …..and I consider myself pretty smart and very astute to personalities…….and I have called him out many many times as a fraud ,,,,,,but I have not yet caught him in a lie and I have tried many times with that to…..
in the end and up to this point I have attributed our differences in culture and language To be a barrier……but I still have strong feelings for him…….
and while I may have spent money on him and helped him out financially …….is that a crime ? NO.it is not , I know these people are very hard workers , they work their butts off in every way and do not get up the ladder very quickly or often at all. I feel for these people immensely…….it’s a very poor country they live in……but they , most , are very good people……

but , can they ALL be prostitutes ? Can there be any real people? Yes , I believe there is ,,,,,he has confided in me his embarrassment to telling me his life and situation…….up to now I have Meet his brother at his place……he took me there , very openly…..
I am not trying to talk you or me into believing…….but if not , he is going to great lengths to take me in and to me some things would be very hard to do , why ? And outright cruel to tell or mislead anyone in this way….
I am always on guard……..and what is the worse thing that might happen? That I actually HELP someone that needs help ..

Similar story here, but with a female. From same country as you. I tried it for 2 years and then finally came to the realization it would not work in the end (this year). But it was exciting while it lasted and i still communicate and occasionally "donate". I know the situation these poor people are in..
Hope yours works out. Enjoy the ride...

I think as long as your happy/content with the situation then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. But sometimes people post on social media, public forums because in the back of their mind they are not so sure about the relationship.

Has his grandmother, mother, father, sister, brother been deathly sick yet and he needs money (which he doesn't have) to save them? Just wait......you are the savior.

It is your money so have fun. Try the honesty test with yourself. How many young locals are chasing you in Canada without giving them money. Now how many Canadian guys would chase you when you throw a ton a money at them. I'm pretty sure I could answer both those questions for you. As I said before it's your money so please go have some fun with it.
Don't get to attached to your sanky as there are no shortage of them here. You will get screwed just don't get hurt.

Gringos seem to have this infatuation with poverty porn...not sure if it gives them some sense of superiority. But it's always "look how poor they, he, she is" they need help etc bla bla. While overlooking the poverty in their own countries. They come to DR and all of sudden want to rescue everybody mainly the person they are "screwing". Would they want to be so helpful if not in a sexual relationship with this person. Come to the capital where there are more cars (many new and expensive) than people 100% true or Santiago or anywhere else but the rural tourist areas (punta cana, north coast etc is still considered rural, campo etc. You see the newest iphones, clothes etc. Many dominicans are living better than the gringos in USA and Canada. I have seen this movie so many times it's not even worth debating. Everyone knows how this will end. And nothing can be said to change the original posters mind. Just grab your popcorn and enjoy the movie for the 1,234,434 time..🍿

While I agree the odds aren’t in her favor, there are many exceptions. A Quick Look at some of our DR1 posters reveals many long time marriages between Dominicans and foreigners. Keepcoming, BobS, Malko, me and Mr AE (48 years next month), etc.

Raise your hand if you’re married to a Dominican for years

And they are world experts at it.

Like the man said, have some fun then walk away. Don't join the club of many thousands that have been misled.

Tell him you don't have any money left from taking so many trips. Don't give him a cent FOR ANY REASON.

BTW, this is over 50 years of experience advising you .

I am with a Dominican woman for 15 years. Never married because I am not stupid. Why did it work? She didn’t need money, work or passport, nor support for her family and heck we didn’t even met on the island. She has her own real estate and assets which she worked hard for abroad. Still I took my time to make sure there wasn’t a second agenda. Oh we have the same age.
There was nothing to gain on either side other than interest in each other. There is a balance and it works.

Real trust is rare and promises are everywhere in the DR. Dominicans are the greatest manipulators!
These guys at the resorts have a pool of fresh meat every week. I bet they have several on the hook anytime and you are one of them without even knowing it.

Your relationship is successful because (IMO) you’re with someone about your own age, who’s not with you for financial gain. Add in similar educational background and chances for success are even better.

My spouse already had a US visa and was traveling for work. He did not need anything (financial) from me. There is only a couple of years difference between us. His English was (it is better now) pretty good. We had an agreement; first years we would make the DR home (turned into longer). Then later in life we would split time between the US and the DR. Now because of my elderly mom (and when my late father was sick), I have spent more time in the US. But relationships are different now. There was no social media, cell phones back in those days. Communication was face to face. I have always been close to his family; my nieces and nephews are like my own children. For the OP just be smart about it.
