That is not totally correct, many women are the bread winners of the family in the DR. Many have careers outside the home, they have the same pressures as a man, if not more. You do also know that many women are supporting a home, children, etc... without help from a man, children's father, etc... I am not sure you know the DR so well.
Yes , that is another situation…….I guess I was just generalizing .
when it comes down to it there are many many diff situations and dynamics.

Only one advice - make sure this is legit before making your move. The culture, the mindset and the language - all are different, and that's why you are reading some negative comments. Welcome to DR1, all the best to you.

Thank you , appreciate it.
can you elaborate for me when you talk about “ mindset “ … what does that mean or refer to in DR.

It’s different for women in the same situation but the opposing sex . DR women are not the bread winners of the family therefore are not under the same pressures and constraints as their counterparts …….making it more difficult for us women from outside to get an honest man , in general , as this is what most people are saying about DR men.
it’s a different situation from the getoo…….being a man from DR. and the person to support the family….
I know many Dominican women that are the main breadwinner in the family. lots of househusbands here.

Why for the love of gawd would I want a woman my age. I guess if I was broke and bankrupt. I have tried the intellectuals and " interesting, fascinating" types. I prefer the young curvaceous types that talk about the salon, gym and going shopping. If I need mental stimulation I call a friend or play golf. Good luck to the poster! Enjoy the ride.

Romantic relationships today are far from their traditional roots, where there was a focus on commitment and values. They really only serve as a status or possession for the emotionally and spiritually weak who feel invalidated without some sort of mate there to prop up the human ego as a treatment for their chronic self doubt.

I (we) don't know any househusbands per se, but indeed many females that are responsible for providing income for the household and we know one very nice family (3 kids), where the mother has a very successful career in a pharmacy (yes, career, she's not in sales but in administration), while the father, despite being a very good person, has not had that much luck on his career. So the only secure income they have had for years has been from that of the mother.

@Lovinglife You talked about offering financial help despite not being asked for. Things in DR need not be asked openly, though most are brazen, some people moan about their hard life so much that the other party offers help on their own. Do not have the saviour mindset, you will be taken advantage of. Offer a sympathetic ear, let the relationship go on for a longer time before bringing money into the equation. You can give the 'Test' as mentioned earlier or you can stop the money and see how long the relationship lasts.

You might want to lookup the term 'sankie' (the female equivalent is 'chapiadora' in DR). Finally, it is your money and your time and all we can do is suggestions.
My other suggestion would be to go easy on the punctuation, the egregious overuse of '.'s to separate sentences is unwarranted

While I agree the odds aren’t in her favor, there are many exceptions. A Quick Look at some of our DR1 posters reveals many long time marriages between Dominicans and foreigners. Keepcoming, BobS, Malko, me and Mr AE (48 years next month), etc.

Raise your hand if you’re married to a Dominican for years
Only 21 years for me.

He has been telling me the truth so far, its me that hadn’t been believing him and believing people like you guys , that were wrong …saying good men don’t exist in DR. But they do ..all people are not bad . He told me up front what his plan was and he never ever asked for money , it was me giving it ,,,,,because I am a helper , he was embarrassed to accept it and told me so…….he has good morals and is truthful , I never ever caught him in a lie .
but I went too far in accusations before realizing his truth to me ……but the language barrier was an issue causing words to be misinterpreted……it was always an uphill struggle…..and I am not too sure I can tolerate this life indefinitely .
heartbroken 💔
and yes , I can hear it now ……all hearts heal 👍

The DR has an enormous amount of single mothers who work because the father does not support his family.

From a study in 2011: According to a 2011 report, there were more than 1.5 million single mothers in the Dominican Republic. The report also stated that over 35% of homes in the country were single-parent households, and 90% of those were headed by women.

Most new Dominican fathers at most will give a can of powdered milk or a package of Pampers and be on the way to the next prospect.

Honestly, you dodged a bullet.

Edit: Oops. Forgot. I'm a single retired American 73 yr. old. Are you looking for a nice quiet place to settle down?

To tie into JD's post, child support does exist here too. I know of one example, young mother of 2 by the same father, kids aged about 6 and 4 at that time, was awarded a whopping 3000 pesos monthly in support. And no surprise...he rarely has managed to pay that.

For the OP - you now know a bit more of what you are willing to do and to put up with. I hope you enjoy your future vacations here, if you choose to return, and gather more experience to help decide if you want to spend longer periods of time.

That was perfectly written. Indeed, it does exist, we have also spoken with a very distant relative of my wife's (a single mother of one child), who has gone to the court on multiple occasions to deal with this matter. It does exist but this mother also had received hardly anything out of it... The last I know is that she had to find a very cheap babysitter and go for a full-time job... Otherwise the child would have no food...

Its amazing how they can eyeball a Room and zone in on their Mark,

I did not think the OP was serious at first . its just too Cliche cuz anyone who does any research can figure this out .
The Sanky Panky Movie should be a MUST view before even traveling single to the DR . especially for Canadian Women ( sorry but its true) .

Sounds like the poster wised up quickly. There is nothing wrong with maintaining a friendship with a sanky, just keep it in prospective.

You're serious? An AI dance floor? I would never have guessed, but then again I haven't been to one. The music/dancing starts way too late for me.
