When I was in the US Army I needed a haircut yesterday; it was Sunday and had to report at 5am; I went into a Dominican beauty salon in NJ and met the first Dominican person ever in my life.....here we are 35 years later retired in Santiago! Wouldn't change her for the world!35 years together, married since 2016
Of course! The entertainment crew give merengue and bachata lessons to the willing guests!!
Ha, you just gave me a flashback to when we stayed at Lifestyles in Cofresi. One of the dancers came over and asked Mr AE to dance, she had no clue he was Dominican. Boy was she surprised when he led her.
These guys are skilled. They walk the beach displaying six pack abs, chiseled shoulders and jaws and a thick mane of hair. The girls and woman can't control themselves. They tell the woman all the things they want to hear and have the patience to listen to meaningless drivel that would drive most men insane. Thier only prerequisite is that the woman has access to cash. Not to cause too much anger, it is a two-sided coin. The woman are just as good as the men, maybe better because they need to support kids. Most men are not used to a woman giving them uninterrupted eye contact and treating them like the center of the universe. Can you imagine how much patience these women must have to listen to some guy's B.S how he was going to play pro- ball except he got a knee injury and now he is working a union job at the parts counter at the local Chevrolet dealershipYou're serious? An AI dance floor? I would never have guessed, but then again I haven't been to one. The music/dancing starts way too late for me.
Thank you for that…I may ,,,,it is something I am hoping to get more information about. Long term stays here …To tie into JD's post, child support does exist here too. I know of one example, young mother of 2 by the same father, kids aged about 6 and 4 at that time, was awarded a whopping 3000 pesos monthly in support. And no surprise...he rarely has managed to pay that.
For the OP - you now know a bit more of what you are willing to do and to put up with. I hope you enjoy your future vacations here, if you choose to return, and gather more experience to help decide if you want to spend longer periods of time.

I am not very familiar with areas other than Punta cana, Higuey, and puerto plata. What part of the DR attracts you?
Wonderful, congratulations. When I was in the US Army I needed a haircut yesterday; it was Sunday and had to report at 5am; I went into a Dominican beauty salon in NJ and met the first Dominican person ever in my life.....here we are 35 years later retired in Santiago! Appreciate your comment.it is very very difficult to distinguish bc of culture and language barrier…..Only one advice - make sure this is legit before making your move. The culture, the mindset and the language - all are different, and that's why you are reading some negative comments. Welcome to DR1, all the best to you.
If you were to go for a long term stay, what would you do? Do you need to work?I am not very familiar with areas other than Punta cana, Higuey, and puerto plata.
I would prefer an area around the airport PUJ for travel reasons ….although I realize it’s the most touristy area and therefore most expensive….
Good question….lolIf you were to go for a long term stay, what would you do? Do you need to work?
May I ask what you want to do? Have you trained to do anything specific?Good question….lol
havent given it much thought……I could , but not full time ….
The North Coast and Puerto Plata in particular has been decently verbally trashed on this forum but I can only recommend it for living. Indeed POP airport is nothing compared to PUJ in terms of traffic, but there are many daily flights to the US. The city of POP is not a tourist trap as such and you could easily get a decent priced rental there. We've lived as a family in the city for close to 8 years, that is our home base.I am not very familiar with areas other than Punta cana, Higuey, and puerto plata.

I am not confirmed in my thinking and thoughts as my vision of living there with a native has been destroyed.therefore I have no wish at the moment to live there as a single woman.May I ask what you want to do? Have you trained to do anything specific?
Spend some time in the DR, travel around to different areas. You may be surprised that you can enjoy yourself while being a single woman.I am not confirmed in my thinking and thoughts as my vision of living there with a native has been destroyed.therefore I have no wish at the moment to live there as a single woman.
if I did move there I would like to do volunteer work . I am retired from my profession and no longer wish to work in that field. So , only the future will tell …..
he will play you and dump you FactsHi there ,
my first time commenting.
I too have fallen in love with a dominican man…I am from canada .….things can be complicated…..it’s a trying time for me……I am thinking about moving there ? maybe short term …to see how things play out ……we have to give it some time with any new relation ship right ?
yes he is working on a resort…..but wants to further himself like anyone , anywhere . I am in agreement.and want to support him , in every way , yes and financially …..to get a degree ….he is a very smart , compassionate man.
congrats Bob ...Had a Mexican girlfriend in the mid 1990s. She was educated and from money, both parents were successful doctors in Pueblo. She didn't mind the age difference of 11 years too much, but I did.
My Dominican wife is three years younger than me, has lots of education, speaks 3 languages, came from a poor background as a child (like me) but with hard work and brains became successful. We are both homebodies, her more so than me, both like to travel, but aren't into the party lifestyle, basically nondrinkers. We are both readers, and outdoor people. I am unreligious and she is a Catholic that only goes to church for funerals...etc. 25 years and counting.
