... 2 weeks ago I unfortunately lost my daddy :(

My mom isn't handling the situation very well and I've convinced her to go on a trip to the DR after New Years...
She's been to Puerto Plata, loved it but has heard soooo many great reviews about the beach in Punta Cana and wants to go there. She's a beach person vs me a drunken pool hobbit.

It's Been 11 years since I started my trips to the DR and alllll were to Bavaro back in the day... I don't recall most nights and I know it's a good thing lol. Last time I was in Bavaro was in 2005 and I know lots has changed.

We use to stay at a resort than called Sunscapes Punta Cana next to Catalonia... mainly cause it was 24 hours :D

Anyone know what the name of it is now ? Is it still 24 hours ? Or are there any other resorts that people can suggest that are not too pricey and preferably 24 hours (for this drunken pool hobbit).

So sorry about your loss. People may think I am crazy but I have sent people to the Barcel? Punta Cana. It is reasonable priced and service was good. The beach there is very nice. It is next to the Hard Rock Punta Cana. Buildings 1-4 are renovated and rather nice. There are plenty of bars to keep you happy and a beautiful beach for mom. They have the quiet pool, active pool and of course a children's pool. There is also the Majestic Colonial which has some good prices compared to others. I enjoy the Barcel? because while it is not a 5 star, maybe more 3-3.5 stars, the oceanfront rooms are reasonable priced (compared to other resorts oceanfronts) and a offer a beautiful view of the beach from your balcony. I can't complain about the service as I found it to be decent. Wherever you decide to go I hope you and mom have a wonderful trip. My mom has been to this resort 2x and has enjoyed it.

So sorry to hear that barbie, my condolences to you and your family.

It will be good for you and mom both to get away for a bit. Send me a PM when you get there, we'll be in DR all winter and plan to get out to PC area too, maybe we can get together with you and a couple of the other old Chat Room regulars [one of them will be there all winter too].

Sad news Barbie, condolences.

I often head over to Bavaro and haven't had a 'bad' experience yet, that said getting out of this city means a lot to me and so a swamp would suffice. The way I decide on my hotel is price through 'hotels.com' or 'travel republic.com', these two always seem to throw up the best prices. It's difficult to find a hotel on that coast that is A/I that is such low quality (playa Dorada kinda crap) that you'd leave, or that isn't a sister hotel and will transfer you free (happened a couple of times but not because of the hotel, but because the kids club was closed).
Check prices, select hotel in budget, quick youtube vid to get an idea of layout, ask on DR1 for opinion/complaints. Nothing negative, book!

Sorry for your loss, I can't help.

Whatever you choose, it is so beautiful and thoughtful what you are doing for your mom that you can't go wrong.

The Barcelo Dominican is right on Bavaro beach three star with a five star beach and a little village withing a 5 minute walk. I stay in a condo on the same beach and yes it is a great place to escape to.

Hi there Barbie, I am so, so sorry to hear of your loss - I feel it, I lost my dad in '96 and my mum just two years ago - please accept my sincere condolences. And what a great idea to bring you mum over here. The first year is most definitely the hardest and to have a few good memories within that period of mourning will be good for BOTH of you.

Barcel? Punta Cana (already mentioned) is the place where we have been going for the last 6 years when we have wanted to 'get away from it all'. Bookit.com can also give you some good leads - by the way they have a sale on right now so do go and check out the package deals. Wherever you end up, let the hotel know the reason for your stay - they will probably give you a bit more preferential treatment (I know they would in the Barcel?).

Oh yes, and if you do go to the Barcel? Punta Cana, try and get into the VIP lounge (Rosa will look after you - bring you all the drinks you will ever need and refresh them over and over again... I know, we once stayed in the lounge for two whole days!)

Good luck and I send you positive vibes
