Just curious. You were to outline more negative than positives. What exactly keeps you there? Or the 4 positives means that much more to you? Forgive my ignorance

No. The negatives outweigh the positives, but that's also true for the Netherlands...

It's more a matter of it wasn't worth coming back here, but now we are here, we bought a house, have three small children at school going age, too much hassle to go back. Maybe it once will happen but several things have to come together to make that happen. Besides, my wife is Dominican and she doesn't like the Netherlands too much, so that would just give us the same situation, one will be missing his/her homeland.

I hear you. Ive been following a lot of the threads here and searched a lot and I think I might finally be ready to make the move. Just focusing on securing a job before making the final move. But where I'm going I won't have to worry about rent so that will be very helpful. I'll be close to Plaza De la bandera.

I will say something else about the DR. It may sound strange but to me its the unvarnished truth. The DR can be more dangerous than Somalia or Afghanistan for foreigners. It sounds crazy but here is my logic. Foreigners that go to places like Somalia or the "Stan" know what they are getting themselves into. They are usually soldiers or aid workers or spies. They know the risks. Most of the gringos that come to the DR know nothing. They just think since it is the Caribbean it is nothing to worry about. I mean we don't hear about buildings blowing up and civil war here and terrorism...and therein lies the danger. Gringos come here and let their guard down. Few soldiers go to Somalia or Afghanistan and let their guard down and those that do come back home in boxes. Some foreigners that come here to the DR return home in boxes to. There has been about 40 gringos murdered in the DR since 2010.

The unwary foreigener can find him or herself in really dangerous situations here simply because they didn't realize the danger in the first place. That is why I say the DR is can be more dangerous than Somalia. Everyone knows what Somalia is. The risks. The risks of the DR are much less apparent until they manifest themselves. Keep that in mind when you move here.

Thank you! I'm a Dominican York and traveled back and forth. So I can completely agree with you about the dangers there that can arise. And sometimes its over stupid little things....

When you have a child the situation becomes complicated. Your mobility goes down a great deal. You also bought a house(a mistake I won't make). I'm wary of becoming too integrated into the DR. No telling if this country will have a full blown collapse. If history and the behavior of the locals is any indication.....

If I did decide to buy a house in the DR it would be for my children. It would be something to give to them. I don't care about owning a house. All humans are renting even if they own because one day you will die and the house will belong to someone else. The final destination for man is a coffin six feet under or an urn if you get cremated. Because of this I see buying a house as meaningless. Also for me it makes no sense to buy a home in a country like the DR where the government is so unbelievably corrupt. To invest hundreds of grand for a home in the DR is a vote for the DR that it will get better. That the government will change. It won't. No 911 corrupt cops. Just don't see the point of buying here. I've also been told here on DR1 that it is damn hard to resell after you buy. Not surprising considering.

Weren't you the one whose father had an apartment in Herrera? I don't agree with DS that DR might be more dangerous than Somalia, but I wouldn't spend days and nights in Herrera. Every Monday I read in the newspaper that someone in a Colmado in Herrera was killed.

Since everyone's final destination is death, why do you care so much about the dangers in DR. You will die one day.

Father in law has an apartment building in Herrera but I am not staying there.

I'll be in Mirador Norte. Well from what I understand sector lines were redrawn. So now I'm told its called Renacimiento.

I already gave a list months ago so I won't do that again. What I will tell you is that the best benefits of living in the DR are NOT THE PEOPLE. This includes the women. The women, prostitution wise, are cheap in price but so are their services, they are no match for a $1,000 an hour top rated American ex pornstar, in looks or performance. I've been with them so I should know. If you want mind blowing sex save your money and hire top rated American girls. If you want cheap but mediocre sex come to the DR.

The best part about living in the DR is the lifestyle. The weather. The beach. I'm indifferent to Dominicans themselves and sometimes find them annoying. They tend to be backward, incompetent, corrupt, or all the above. There are good Dominicans to but they seem to be underrepresented. The energy costs are also a benefit, last month my power bill was $12, clearly you will never see a $12 power bill in the USA. If you can look past the people the DR is wonderful. If not you won't like it here.

Dude, whatever you're on, I hope you give it up soon. News flash, I'm Dominican. Although far from perfect, my people are warm, welcoming, loud, intense, loving, friendly to a fault perhaps, and on and on. Get a clue!

I'd like to compile a list of what I wish I had known before moving to the DR. And, of course a list of the pleasant surprises as well. Please contribute items in a list format with related explanations. Thanks.

You're a real person?

Too existential for me, man. What an erudite you are. When I grow up, I'd like to be like you. I'm humbled to receive do much attention---I'm not worthy!!!!!! :)

Don't be offended

I'm having a few, in a bar surrounded by eye candy....

Perception is everything. ..

You're just a little nauseous, no big deal.....

Best thing: Dominicans tend to be more happy than ex-pats
