The Dictionary of Dominican Spanish (Diccionario del español dominicano or DED) contains 11,061 entries and 19,831 definitions, backed by 10,173 usage examples from reliable sources. These nearly 20,000 definitions reflect the unique uses of Dominican speakers that do not belong to what lexicographers refer to as general Spanish, which is common to the 600 million Spanish speakers worldwide. In other words, our dictionary falls into the category of differential dictionaries, as it only includes words that, in general terms, distinguish Dominicans from other Spanish speakers. Five lexicographers have worked for nine years in the preparation of the two editions of DED.
