The US State Department gave an overview of the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

The US State Department says that on 5 September, US Secretary Blinken will travel to Port-au-Prince to meet with Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille and the Transitional Presidential Council. The Secretary will reaffirm the United States’ commitment to supporting the Haitian people and fostering a secure and peaceful Haiti. The US Secretary, Prime Minister Conille, and the Transitional Presidential Council will also discuss Haiti’s return to a democratic path and the urgent need for elections so the Haitian people can determine their own future.

Following his visit to Haiti, the US Secretary of State will travel to the Dominican Republic. On the visit to the Dominican Republic, the Department of State says: “He will meet with President Luis...

This is the kind of visit that Antony Blinken’s visit sounds like a positive step. It is gratifying to note that the U. S interactive with not only Haiti but also with the Dominican Republic in regard to some significant issues. I trust that this will result in tangible improvement on security, democracy and governance as well as cooperation between the two regions.

Wishful thinking.

Looks like Luis removed his torture device. A Banana Republic brand tie would be suitable, too bad these don’t have textured logo’s.

Back on topic, please. Europe and Ukraine are not pertinent to the thread.

I thought it was a humorless but telling indicator that Blinken went through a few dignitaries before he even got to shake hands with Luis.

I once saw an explanation of subtle manipulations of protocols that leaders use to get a better impression than the other. Having someone wait, put in a less favorite spot in a photo op, having to bend over to shake hands etc.
Luis not shaking hands first and not wearing a tie might be subtle indicators to show that he is not impressed by this visit and the reasons of this visit.

I'm confused by the handshaking comments. From the video in post #7, it appears they shake hands at the end of the presser, with no handshakes with others first. What am I missing?

Blinkin managed to slide in 2-3 nods to the Dominican party (US) in his responses, one being his mention of "VP Harris". And of course the reporter from the Washington Post... That's OK it all comes down to politics no matter where you are, what you promise, whatever.
However, what is said on Sept 6, might be worth less than a bag of shells on Jan 6, 2025.
That's really ...just the way it is.

To your point, everything, and I mean everything, is orchestrated. From who is received first to who gets to stand next to whom, even the place where they meet are all designed from a political optic perspective. This meeting was no different.

In that it comes on the heels of his visit to Haiti, he is straddling and trying to be a broker of some sort. Perhaps they even discussed why the DR does not have a U.S. ambassador yet……and what if anything needs to be done to get one.

It is to coin a phrase, a political dog and pony show…….on both sides.

Respectfully,

Correct.

As for Luis not wearing a necktie, good on him. I’ve noticed that many people who wear ties tend to be mentally constipated and can’t think outside the box. Maybe the tie is restricting blood flow to their brains. My money’s on Luis being more politically astute on DR matters than Blinken. Doesn’t matter what he is wearing.

The average Dominican is far more astute on DR matters than Blinken will ever be
you think he really cares about what happened to Dr he's probably just chairing a meeting on how to get that imbecile out of office in Venezuela than he will go visit the CIA
