So you're saying that people who relocate to DR should come with empty pockets and settle in a card board box underneath the bridge. and someone who comes in with means will not make it. It sounds ironic to me.

Please show me where I said people should come to the DR with no money?

I have lived and worked successfully in seven (7) countries.
(DR, Brazil, Japan, Australia, Holland, USA, UK)

Every time I relocated, money was never an issue in my decision.
Not because I had lots of it, but other factors far outweighed my reason for wanting to relocate. New experience, new cultures, different cities etc.

I arrived in the DR back in 97 on a 2 week vacation with enough money to
last me 2-3 weeks, I stayed almost 2 years. I returned in 2002 after living and working in the USA.

Some people have the ability to adapt, network, develop and make the most out of a situation. Others prefer to throw money at it or buy their way out of problems or inconveniences. They are usually the people that "bitch and moan" about the DR, Dominicans, lack of 1st services and what it's like back home etc etc etc.

I have seen plenty of people come here with money and not make it. Plus I have seen people come here with very little money and do well.
I guess I fit into the 2nd cardboard box :)

I don't see myself moving to a third world country except back to Cuba the day i get the chance. Tha's why i live in Miami, we have everything here, it doesn't get cold, great beaches, great hunting, fishing, i can ride my bike all year, crime is WAY lower... There isn't a single thing you can do in DR that i couldn't do here.

Hunting? What are you hunting there? Florida panthers? Are you hungry, or just killing animals for fun?

So, in Miaimi, you could jump in your car and pop the cap off a bottle of beer and wave at a traffic cop, bottle in hand, as you drive by him?
How about going for a drive in the mountains?
Have you tried finding waterfalls in Miami?
Next time your car is overheating, try pulling over and knock on someone's door, asking for water.
Have you ever walked down main street with your Rhodesian Ridgeback, off the leash?
Other than drinking & driving, these are things I do frequently.
So now that you have been proven wrong, tell me why you are on this message board, with your disdain for this country?
And why would you want to go back to Cuba, if Miami's so great?

You did not read the original post carefully. I didn't say people come to DR to make money. I said you need money in DR to help outweigh the negative things.
I don't think you or anybody in this board is in a position to tell anyone not to relocate to DR.

I don?t tell anyone anything.
To relocate is up to each and every one.

The difference is that you visit, may you be Dominican by blood, and I live here.
As I have lived in several more countries.
It is not about being rich, and come with a pile of money.
It is not needed.

It is about having the skills to adapt to a culture, to speak a language, and most important to have skills that you can do something with in a new country to make a decent living.
Relocating is not a cheap thing in the end, and costs of living need to be covered anywhere you chose to live your life.
Otherwise you will only be on survival level, as the pile of money brought will make no difference at all if you don?t have the rest.
Money goes away here, if your missing the insight.

That is why I said that in my opinion your comments are not really valid, and things are not an issue for people that move here.
And if you are saving up a little to finally settle here, and do anything of what you have suggested in other posts of yours, then you?re dead broke in a few months.

"The DR is a developing nation"

Well aren't all nations developing? It's a third world country like 99% of Latin America (my country included).

"Hunting? What are you hunting there? Florida panthers? Are you hungry, or just killing animals for fun?"

What gives you the right to question my hobbies? have i questioned yours? But anyway, I hunt dear, rabbit, hog... and most of the time i eat them, is that a problem?

Yes Miami is a lot safer than DR and that my friend, it's a fact.

"So, in Miaimi, you could jump in your car and pop the cap off a bottle of beer and wave at a traffic cop, bottle in hand, as you drive by him?"

No, here you usually respect the laws, this is a civilized society unlike ours.

"How about going for a drive in the mountains?"

OK, you got me there.

"Have you tried finding waterfalls in Miami?"

No, we don't have them, you win here.

"Next time your car is overheating, try pulling over and knock on someone's door, asking for water."

lol, my car is new and it doesn't overheat. I've seen VERY few cars overheating here but in case they do there is a free service on state roads that help you with car problems FREE OF CHARGE!.

"Have you ever walked down main street with your Rhodesian Ridgeback, off the leash?"

I don't have a Rhodesian Ridgeback (that sounded very fruity to me) that's a dog, right? Well the only animals I like are the ones i can eat so i'm not interested in walking a leashless whatever-his-name was, lol.

"Other than drinking & driving, these are things I do frequently."

Oh my friend, i do soo much more! I hunt, scuba dive, ride my speed bike, ride my dirt bike, travel the world...

"So now that you have been proven wrong, tell me why you are on this message board, with your disdain for this country?
And why would you want to go back to Cuba, if Miami's so great?"

Proven wrong? jejejejeje, whatever. Disdain for DR? facts are facts my friend
i'm just being realistic and you aren't. I go to DR 2-3 times a month for work for a couple of days each time, i usually go on fridays and back on sundays. I have many friends there and a girlfriend. I'm a political refugee (was jailed and kicked out of med school for denouncing my country's communist regime 10 years ago) so i can't go back to my country until the political situation changes.

Does that answer your questions?

That is what I thought. We've seen those observations in other threads. General reaction indicates that everybody is out of step except you.

It is about having the skills to adapt to a culture, to speak a language, and most important to have skills that you can do something with in a new country to make a decent living.

A decent living? From my observations the only people who make a decent living in DR are those who steal, high goverment officials, some professional, and some business owners. These people can make 50,000 and above per month. They have it good in DR in terms of being able to afford what they want. The rest make peanuts compared to their salaries. Someone who makes 4,000 pesos a month and can't afford a lot of things, which can be expensive how good can they have it in DR? This is why dominicans who live in DR as well as abroad don't see things as rosey as expats that have means do.The low salaries in DR is the downside of the dominican economy period.
Unless you're lucky or smart enough to go from rags to riches in DR.
anyone who wants a good quality of life in a country where money is scarce, needs to bring it from the outside in and invest it. Otherwise you would be taking a big risk and might not find enough money there to support a decent lifestyle.

It just continues to amaze me that Indiana16 continues to think that by way of her DNA and a few summer vacations to the DR, she is more qualified to comment on life in the DR than those that live and work here.

You have a very competitive attitude. You feel that you are the only one who knows about DR. If other people state an opinion they are wrong and you're right because you're the only one who knows.

Simply stating a fact. Having settled in the DR. Living in the DR. Working in the DR. Your opinion, which you state as fact, is wrong.

Ms Indiana......

You have the wrong concept as to what "making it" in DR is all about. You may think money is the common denominator. It is not.
Although it's obvious that you need some money to survive, material possessions or lack thereof does not figure in as motive for Dominicans like me and foreigners alike who want to live there.
Allow me a few words: I have lived in the US most of my life and earned enough to live well and provide for my family. We have all the needed things and lack absolutely nothing exept.....The simple life. the kind of life that feels right. The tranquility, the warmth (social & climatic), the unhurried pace, the welcoming interaction between peoples, le joi de vivre evident everywhere, the many intangible raison de etre, etc. If it were not for all my damning obligations to my family, I would gladly fly off this gilded cage, give it all up and start anew. A "decent living" isn't measure in terms of dollars but in overall satisfaction in what you do and, more importantly, in where you are...Depending on these parameters, you can be the saddest millionaire or happiest pauper.
Never make the mistake of equating money with happiness.

I Just Bought Eight 100mg.Sildenafil(Viagra!) Tabs for 400 Pesos!

Since I break them into "smaller" pieces, that is "at least" 16 "TIMES" for only $12 US! = "75c" each????
But it just keeps getting better!
I will meet a pretty young Dominicana at my "Trick Pad" at Noon, have a "Girlfriend Experience",and give her 400 peso for her efforts!

I have nothing "HARD" to give up in the USA,the only "Hard" thing I have is right here!!

"What A Country"!!!!!!!!!

Does that answer your questions?

Living in a 1st world nation DOES not make YOU a FIRST WORLD INDIVIDUAL.

I see plenty of 1st WORLD INDIVIDUALS living in 3erd WORLD NATIONS.

Regarding MIAMI, it is a BANANA REPUBLIC and BIG CHUNKS of it belongs to the 3erd world (including Hialiah) Miami is the POOREST city in North America (excluding Mexico)

Did you know that the labour laws of the State of Florida DOES NOT provide for VACATION WITH PAY? 1st World??

How about of BEING ILLEGAL to speak a language other than ENGLISH in your workplace? 1st World? lol

Why do I prefer living in DR rather than Miami? Because in the DR (as a Cuban) you'd be a FIRST CLASS CITIZEN (money aside) and in MIAMI you'll allways be a "GREASE POT"/ "SPIC". Also in the DR you'll be Juan instead of John or Pedro instead of PETER. lol

About going back to CUBA, I can tell you that when you do it, they won't find you "CUBAN"lol

Consumption and material things does not make you wealthy. Better look into the concept of "net worth" I know alot of so-called poor Dominicans with a "net worth" higher than alot of people from Miami.

I have not found a Cuban yet that is not a "millionaire" from Miami.

Sorry dude but we cubans freaking own this place. Come and visit, i'll give you a tour. I'll take you on my friends boat around the port, then i'll give you a ride on my GSXR. I sence you are jealous but it ain't my fault i happen to live better than you. (while spending 7 days a month in DR with transportation, food and a 5 star hotel included):p

here is a comment from a dutch lady, from Holland, a so called rich and developed country. i have visited miami too. i live in santo domingo. i personally think that miami with all its "luxury" is more cheap than santo domingo. there might be always electricity in miami, but somehow i prefer the authentic culture, art, music etc. from the dominican republic. miami has some odd mix of bad immigrants with cheap taste. but then, may be i am looking for other things in my life than somebody else.
