Isn't jagua supposed to have life extending properties? When first introduced to it, I was told Balaguer used to drink it.

actually, it does not extend your life. you think it does, because after drinking a glass of it, you wonder what the heck is taking death so long from you out of your misery.

sounds like this jagua thing is another dreadful nightmare like noni. out of curiosity i checked how much this hellish drink (noni) sells for in poland. equivalent of about 1500 pesos per one liter bottle. you'd have to pay me that much to drink a spoonful of this devilish concoction ;)

Jagua grows in a (typically) very tall tree and I don't think they're as common anymore. I like them, although wouldn't consider them one my top fruits. The best way I've had them is as a warm "tea" after dinner - Think after dinner liqueur to settle your stomach. I don't like the fruit itself as it just tastes like a semi-sweet sponge, but the tea is great.

I've also bought a couple of Jagua liqueur and it's great IMO, but it's definitely an acquired taste. You can find it at any liquor store or supermarket in The DR.

In our farm we had a huge Granadillo plant with so many fruit that most of them would spoil or we would just feed it to the pigs. I like Granadillo as well, but it's just a very "watery" fruit. Kind of like milder (less sweet) version of watermelons.

suarezn, just because i respect your opinions, i am going to test the waters to see if i can also respect your tastebuds. i am going to try a bottle of that liqueur. if i drop dead after a shot, consider it to be your doing.

It's definitely an acquired taste with a flavor that is hard to describe, as it is not similar to anything else. All frio-frio street vendors carry the flavored tea. Not my favorite!

I always heard stories from campo relatives about it being good for diabetics, and people with kidney problems. Maybe that's why it tastes like medicine!

I agree that it's an acquired taste, but it smells like stinky socks to me!

I've never tried it, never even heard of it before. Mr. AE says the campo folks soak the fruit in water for some time, then boil it and drink the 'tea'. But they don't eat the fruit.

Wants to know if I want to try it. After this thread, I respectfully declined.

Actually; they do eat the fruit by making dulce... meaning, they cook it down in water, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves, in the same manner that they do it with orange peel, cherries, cashew friut, etc. It still ends up having the same distinct, funky taste.

AE, I wouldn't discourage you from trying it. Everyone's tastebuds are different, and some people do love it.

i tried out a jugo de jagua when i was out cycling through Gaspar a couple of weeks back.
The initial taste is good but it has a bit of a gasoline finish!
But it never really finishes, for the next hour or so cycling it kept repeating on me with this hideous gasoline taste

Never again!!

Exactly my experience. Down to the repitiendo part. And I only had two sips.
