I suppose that number SHOULD be our respective embassies. It would be interesting to know if anyone has had actually experience with their embassy helping them (or not) out of the trouble of this kind of situation.
I think it is ESSENTIAL that every Ex-Pat visits, registers & makes the acquaintance of their respective Consular officer. It is generally unnecessary for Ex-Pats to have dealings with the Embassy as 90% of individuals requirements will be handled via the Consulate.

Over the years we have had cause to be in contact with most Consulate offices up here on the North Coast. Tim Hall (Canadian), Heinz (German) when he was alive & working in Puerto Plata, were always extremely helpful. The Brit Consul has used his 'Get Out Of Jail Quick' card for me a couple of times & has always followed up promptly any problem we have thrown at him on behalf of others. I can not say the same for the consular staff in the Embassy down in Santo Domingo who seem to want to work at ONE pace only - their OWN pace!! Response to requested help (on behalf of American citizens I have tried to assist) from the American Consulate (North Coast AND in Santo Domingo) has fallen a little bit behind of these others!

I say again - in my view it is IMPERATIVE that each Ex-Pat registers, visits & gets to know his consular official AND gets the Tel. No., address & hours of work imbeded into their brain. A cell phone number for 'Out of Office Hours' emergency calls should also be remembered! ~ Grahame.

i totally agree with you about the sto domg office.8 or so yrs ago i called their offices a nbr of times and hit a stone wall with at least 2"dominican"women that were answering the phone.they were as much use as teiths on a bull so i gave up with them and contacted foreign affairs at home.
i was quite surprised that there was nobody from the u.k itself manning the phones or who you could get in touch with at the embassy?as on my travels to a nbr of other countries i visited i found the embassys there were manned by nationals from the country they were providing the information for.why is this not the case here can anybody tell me?
another question:glasses: what does a perso do if the country they are from even though it is a part of the european union does not have a consular office here and they require assistance?dont think the closest country to you helping out rule applies here?any body got the answer/s?:glasses:

subject matter........

Glad to see we are getting back on to the "subject matter" but just how far have we got here?? I am a little confused after 8 pages!! Have you been back inside for the second visit yet & if so, what was the cause of THAT confinement?

You still have not responded to my thoughts/questions on the 3rd page as to IF/WHEN & HOW you involved the British Consul here in Puerto Plata. Also, did you get help/visits from your friends - delivery of food, washing & shaving things, money etc? I would appreciate your comments & suggestions on these areas! ~ Grahame.
the 2nd confinement was in san pedro de marcoris.i had just got on the back of a moto concho on a rainy night when a girl called out to the driver dame una bola(give me a lift)and he stopped the bike.i told him"hey im paying, move i dont want a hooker riding on the back with me'(that night any how!)she got on any way and we had just pulled out when 4 cops jumped out, guns pointed, 1 eventually in my side and put the 3 of us up against the wall.i was'ent too freaked as all i was carring was a fried chicken take away and had a clear conciense.
however the hooker was found to be "carrying"3 rocks of crack which meant that ALL 3 of us were dragged off to the cop shop.locked up in a cage along side me and the driver was the girl who was sobbing crying and screaming that the dope wasent hers but the gringos.to which i was hollering back"shut the pluck up witch,YOU jumped on the back of my concho and now you are trying to get both me and the driver in the poo!long story short,we were all 3 held over night but SHE and the driver(HER 1ST)were let out the next day and i was left holding the can,IN THE CAN!
i got transfered after 2 days to another police station where i got to speak with the l.tent of the DEA and i told him the story,THE REAL STORY.and could i please get out.he was definitly 1 in 2 million as he DID sympatise with me but informed me that with the other 2 already released and the way the 1st report had been written up he was in a bit of a jam himself and couldent let me go straight away.
so after 12 days locked up he finally had a senior(BIG)come in on his day off(sun)and we all 3 talked in his office.may God bless the 2 of those men as unlike i and probably what every one else would think, they were not looking nor asking that i pay any finance as it was obviously a stich up from their juinors.so next day(thank God)i was brought to the seniors office where i had to sign some papers basicaly saying i was being let out under investigation.i was so relieved to get out i can not put it into words.it really was hell,if not pergatory on earth for those 13 days.
in answer to your british councel question.i am not officialy a british citizen and my country does not have an embassy here so that was not an option.
i did get the guard to call what i now know were fair weathered friends so no i had no one bringing me in any supplies and i had no cash on me bar 100 or so pasos at the time of my arrest.so as i said in one post i was at the mercy and generosity of the other guys who were cooped up inside with me over the course of the 2 weeks.some days were better than others, though the bad ones food and drink wise consisted of a couple of bread rolls and water from the tap in the toilet.better than any health spa though admittidly as i lost about a stone and a half(21 pounds)within the time, though i have never recomended the half starve yourself diet to any one in my life.
dident shave for the 13 days but there was allways a bit of soap or shampoo being shared around(no blades of any kind are allowed in the cages, and most people are sent on to the fortaleza or released after 2 to 3 days).
there were "some"light moments too inside which i will add tomorrow.:pirate:

The European Union itself has representation in Santo Domingo via the Delegation, but although they might have information for you, they don't provide consular services to EU citizens AFAIK.

To find out which other embassy covers your country's affairs in the DR, contact your country's foreign ministry. It isn't necessarily the nearest country.
